You can try to right click on the shortcut, click on the compatibility tab then choose windows XP SP 2, choose to disable desktop composition & visual themes. I got mine to work this way, but I can only run the game in 640x480 resolution

You must execute WWP on Windows WDDM graphics driver, Nvidia and Ati drivers slowest WWP und cause errors.
Sory for my english, I'm kid from Poland :D
www.nvidia.com
www.ati.com
download the latest drivers for your video card and operating system and report back if it works now... if not then try updating Direct X via www.microsoft.com

I just got a new toshiba laptop and it comes with vista, i tried WWP on it, it installed fine but when i go to play it,the screen goes black & gives me a "WWP has stopped working" message and asks to send information and things like that, how can i get this to work? :(
I don't really know much about Vista, but my friend's got laptop that runs under Vista and wwp worked there almost fine (sometimes it goes all black).
P.S: Excuse my English.

heh. well at least I'm not the only one. I wouldn't mind so much as I know (now) that vista & my graphics drivers suck but it's the fact that the store I bought it from had a very large sticker saying *VISTA COMPATIBLE*
Although I do detect something suspicious as my graphics card & vista have been able to play everything from high end mmorpg's to cheap, re-launched classics, after some tweaking occassionaly sure, but they all worked.

Where is this (WORMS ARMAGEDDON) fix??? I have the latest patch and it won't work under vista (i think from reading more posts here due to the fact i have an intel 940gml on my laptop) so i am forced to play it in a Virtual Machine running xp (only after i uninstall the vmware mouse driver and replace with m$ one as it made mouse super fast in game and un playable (but now mouse is bad in desktop)).
My Pc laptop is a hp pavilion 9300 with windows vista ultimate... I try to launch the game as xp sp2 with 256 colors and it works...

How did you get a better graphics card running in VMWare? I'm stuck at 640x480 resolution @ 16 colors. No idea how to make it go higher.

I've got the game for Vista, but every time I try to play for example singleplayer, there comes the screen where the cake should be, BUT the screen is pink expect the place where the cake is, in that place is just a black square. This problem did come after I did a map with the editor and has been in the game from that day. I've tried repairing and uninstalling, but that doesn't work....... any tips????
exactly what franpa said
actually no, he was saying that he would be taking a huge step back, like using his 80 lb boom box from the 80's instead of an ipod by going back to vista. By the way vista is balls, nothing but problems....

did any of you guys find solutions??
Ok, I had the same problems you have all explained.
I fixed it in about 2 minutes.
Go to the installation folder and find the WWP application icon.
Right click on it and select Compatibility. Then set it to Windows 98 (not XP SP2, remember when this game was made please!).
Then turn on the full permissions/Admin thingy.
Ta da, it works!
I have spent the last hour or so playing about with all 4 single player modes, multiplayer and the terrain editor thing.
You might still get some crashes, but that is just because you are running a OS from 2006 with a game made nearly 10 years ago. All you need to do is re-start the game and carry on.
My laptop only has a chipset graphix option, not nVidea or ATi, it is running Vista Home premium which is fully up to date.

Which toshiba laptop? My Satellite A205 is having nothing but trouble with WWP
I used to, and admittantly still am, addicted to WA! I've been looking for an upgrade however and firgured I'd give WWP a go. I'm haven't actually got it yet, just checking on compatibility first.
I did a load of searching on how to get WA working under vista after i got this new comp, and well... there (as far as i know) are only 2 sollutions.
1- install the older (winXP) graphics drivers for your graphics card. This has proven to work for WA however note that you will NOT be able to get Vista's aero effect (which is a complete waste of system resources but it does look good)
2- the option I've gone for for running WA and it works FINE (with the exception of very MINOR framerate issues which aren't exactly the end of the world). Install Microsoft Virtual PC, and install and earlier version of Windows with that. Emulate it, and install WA (or WWP) onto say Win98. I personally emulate Win2k and it all works.
In my opinion Vista isn't worth the trouble (I'm only keeping it 'till the NEW feeling goes, then I'm downgrading to XP). A downgrade, for all those unkowing, isn't difficult as long as you back up your docs onto either another computer, removable media, or an external hdd, etc.
Hope some of that waffle helps someone maybe :)

just bought a new computer, vista because there are no xp driver for this system :(
tried to install wwp just like i did on win2000 and xp, but the wwp.exe
doesn't show up, for some strange reason everything else is there, just
not the wwp.exe
4 hours of vista and i hate it already, why can't they work
on 2k and xp and expande the futures, no there must be a new
windows so more dvds can be sold...microflop ;)
It's actually intel who is the main culprit; their vista drivers don't work with directdraw, which the 2nd gen worms games rely on.

OK, no-one is helping anyone here, so here's a couple of possible solutions and directions.
find your executable file (wwp.exe) (probs in your program files)
Right click, and select 'Properties'
Click the 'Compatability' tab and do the following:
Choose 98/SE in the Compatability drop-down (WWP was released back then, with teh Dreamcast, remember???)
Check the 600x480 box (this will make it small though - sorry)
Check the Disable Visual Themes box
and let it run as administrator if you like
this is the common way to make many 'older' games run under Vista. its a bit lame, but you can't polish a turd huh?
Hopefully this will help many of you.

This helped for the title screens, but upon the game loading, it still came on with the inverted grainy colours. I'm running a brand new (got it yesterday) Sony Vaio with a NVidea 6800 card on vista
Try keeping the Worms World Party folder open in Explorer whilst starting the game. It sounds illogical, but for WA at least (and WA and WWP are almost identical), it works with a lot of people.

I solved the color bug for WWP on Vista by closing all other applications. This includes MSN messenger and Windows Sidepanel. Some how they steal the palette from WWP.
It now runs fine in 1024x768 without compatibility mode activated.
Another "fix" was to force WWP to run in 256 colors. This would cause the colors of the intro menus to be screwed up, but the game colors where fine then.
I think I've tried every compatibility setting and with all apps closed and with explorer open. The furthest I've gotten is the TITUS screen (compatibility mode win98/ME or win95) before it crashes and I'm forced to close. The resolution and color setting seem ineffective. I don't know what else to try. I've got a Dell XPS 1530 with Vista Ultimate x32 and 256 MB geforce 8600 GT video card with up-to-date driver.

BTW
Worms+ on DOSBox works better on Vista now than ever before :-)
For the ones who are giving us solutions, please say what's your vista version, there are millions of vista types plus there's the 32-bit and 64-bit thing. It's not nice to give a solution that is working for your Ultimate but it doesn't for people who have cheap versions of vista that come with laptops.
I'm using a Toshiba laptop with Intel Graphics, Vista Home Premium 32-bit and so far nothing worked. Compatibility doesn't work (and yes, I have administrator rights), changing the resolution doesn't work, my graphic card update. Ideas? :|
Working, however one problem that i account to my copy of the game, and not compatibility.
Using compatibility Mode (Windows 9x/ME), Admin rights, and Forcing to run in 256 colours. The menu appears with wrong colours at first, however gameplay is fine, and menu is fine after a game has been played. Running in 1024x768 Res.
Vista Home Premium x32. SiS Mirage 3 Graphics.
Well, I got a way for it to work with Intel Chipset. I installed the right drivers for it, but from Windows XP and it works. I also used the compatibility mode for Windows XP and the 256 colours option. Everybody with the same problem as I do, try to download the XP drivers.
But I recommend you all to install the vista drivers while you're not playing for several days, the XP ones really hurt my sight. (And I thought there was nothing worse than Vista, lol, but I have sensible eyes anyway XD)
Hi!
I've got the same problem as you guys did on an HP dv6500 laptop running vista home premium. After i tried all sorts of solutions the one that worked for me was running the game in win98 compatibility mode and switching the vista theme to "windows classic".
Now works fine.
No patch or anything.
Good luck!;)
really wish there was some form of real help form the inverted colour problem, since ive tried everything suggested, and itll last til the first move in any mode, and go messed.
When I start WWP on Windows Vista Ultimate x64 I have as many users bad colors (screen below).
http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/6324/dsc01314am1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Starting game in the modes of compatibility nothing gives. Once is normally and once bad but often bad. Just when I started WWP in the mode of compatibility from Windows 98 / Me and resolution 640 x 480 it was normally. However play in such resolution is not comfortable... Maybe new patch from the Team 17?
Sorry for my bad english. I'm from Poland ;)

I have the same problem, y have Windows Vista, and my computer has very good performance (performance? is that the word?? srry about my english, im argentinian), when I installed Rise of Nations in my old PC the game suddenly shuted down after de intro, and without saying anything, i spent about 3 night before giving up, about a month later i bought a nvidia video card, i installed it and its drivers and Rise of Nation started and worked, magic i said.
the same problem i have with WWP, but i have no video card, and wwp suddenly shuts down, and all my lovely, supersmart vista says is: worms world party stopped working, well, i recomend trying to borrow a video card and see if it solves the problem, i'd bet that's the problem
chau, nos vemos, por fin en castellano, ya me estaba cansando de hablar en ingles, me cuesta un poco la verdad, y seguro que se noto
Hi. I had the problem with the psychadelic colours when trying to Play Worms World Party. I have been reading all of the posts regarding getting the game running under Vista & after trying all of the solutions offered & not fixing the problem I was ready to give up.
Then I decided to access the game from the 'Games' menu. I left the compatibilty mode as Vista, ticked the Run in 256 colours option & the 'Run as administrator' box & it now works perfectly.
I am running Vista ultimate with an 8800 GT video card.
Hope this helps some of you.

A better variation of your solution is to get away all the fancy transparency of the shell. Just select the "Disable Visual Themes under the "Compatibility" menu and close the sidebar. By killing the explorer.exe you are doing just the same thing - you're turning off the transparency. Setting a windows 98 compatibility is for me of no need. Try this settings...at least they worked for me. :D
From the exe try setting the compatibility settings to XP service pack 2 and colours to 256, Then play the game through the exe. Incredibly it worked for me.

What do you mean by a Windows 98 Emulator?
Would it emulate DirectX?
What version of 98 would it emulate?
Are you referring to something like VMware or DOSBOX?

And I should think so too.
The only thing that could come close is a virtualizer like vmware, virtualbox or virtual pc. None of which would be able to run WWP at all, except vmware which has experimental directx support, but it really isn't worth the hassle.
how do i get WWP to work on vista?

You need to be a little less vague than that. For many people WWP works fine under Vista. Whether it will work for you depends on your hardware, how up-to-date your drivers are, etc.

I finally struck gold when I went into the Compatibility settings of the WWP.exe shortcut, changed compatibility mode to XP SP2, ticked 'disable visual themes' and 'disable desktop composition' options, and ticked 'run as admin'. Didn't need to force 640x480 resolution..
That didn't actually help at first...
What I did have to do, is click 'Show settings for all users' at the bottom, which requires admin permission, and repeat the same on the new, identical options screen that pops up, and which had none of my custom options selected (sneaky, eh??).
Once I did that, I no longer got the black world and badly coloured worms. Can only run it on 640x480 though, or else everything goes black and I can only hear sounds.
The only buggeration is that I can't create or edit teams, which, I've read here, is a known issue. Used to spend ages creating them when I were a lad :)

Here is the fix I created a couple of days ago. I tested more than ten computers (both desktops and notebooks, only 32bit) and it works. This fix is actually an automated proccess which disables some vista features, then starts the game and when the game is over it reenables all the features. You don't need to set compatibility to XP or anything else. Just install it. And everything ingame works. Good Luck!
EDIT: AS TESTERS REPORT, THIS FIX WILL NOT WORK ON VISTA LAPTOPS USING AN INTEL GRAPHICS CHIPSET.

Cheers, I tried the fix and the best thing is that somehow it allows me to create new teams! (I already fixed the max resolution issue). The only issue is that after exiting the game, it doesn't re-populate the taskbar with all the icons I had before (like antivirus, etc.) Which led me to discover this nice trick to restart Vista Explorer without killing it in the processes list:
1. Open the Start menu.
2. Hold down the Control and Shift keys, and right-click on a blank space in the Start menu.
3. Choose "Exit Explorer."
4. Open the Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), navigate to File->Run, enter "explorer" and hit OK.
Neat :)

Sorry, Worms World Party (like many older games) arent' compatible with Intel's graphic chipsets under Vista. That's because Intel are too lazy to write backwards-compatible drivers. You should send Intel an email.

saying what can they change anything to make it work
If intel release vista drivers for their graphics cards that are fully compatible with direct draw, then wwp will work.

so until then i cant play it what about armageddon
armageddon has the same problem, but i think (not sure) that worms 2 works.

do you think intel will sort this problem any time soon
No idea, but you are certainly not alone in waiting.

Which antivirus do you use? It may not be able to decompress it.This executable is a Batch (.bat) file converted to an Executable (.exe) one. It is 100% safe. If you want, I can give you the source code.

We've said it before and we'll say it again: WORMS ARMAGEDDON AND WORMS WORLD PARTY WILL NOT WORK ON VISTA LAPTOPS USING AN INTEL GRAPHICS CHIPSET. This is because Intel's Vista drivers aren't backwards compatible. Short of sending them an email and letting them know that there's yet another person who can't play old games on their new laptop, there's nothing that can be done.

Hi,
I have a Toshiba Satellite A200. Vista Home Premium SP1 with a Mobile Intel 945 Express Chipset Family and chip type being: Intel GMA 950.
I have the latest driver: 7.14.0010.1504 which is latest as of 30th August 2008.
I have tried every possible combination of setting by going into the PROPERTIES of the application. Did NOT work. Tried the fix by LEVO, did not work.
If you read till here and are wondering what my problem is: i get a blank screen for a few seconds and then it says WWP does not work.
Now I know (by reading this thread) that some people have fixed this problem. All I want to how is: HOW?
Can someone please tell me, which solution could possibly work. (because the first two pages of this thread helped me waste my time and the third page was all about the fix which :( dint work for me...or maybe i didnt use it how i was supposed to ?)
The only solution that i havent tried is VMWare and downgrading my Intel driver. I didn't do these because:
1. Nobody replied with positive results
2. Apparently downgraidng my driver could result in a BSoD so I would like to know if someone tried it and it dint give them a heavily annoying blue screen.
Thanks in advance, please do try to help.

Without wanting to sound rude, I'd answered your question in the post prior to yours:

It sucks, to be sure, but there's no solution for this. It's a problem at Intel's end, not Team 17's.
Using VMWare is possible, but it has not been tried with WWP, so the game itself might not react well with VMWare.
Downgrading drivers worked for some and BSOD'd for others, so if you are not experienced in fixing things like that, best not to try it...

VMWare (and all such programmes) do not have direct access to the vga. So most games wont work.

...but Worms Armageddon does work, and it and WWP are extremely similar.
IS there some way to run WWP in a windowed mode under WinXP ???:-/
Cause the game is soooo long to run .. better chat in the meantime

There isn't. Sorry.
Hey,
I'm using Virtual PC 2007 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=28C97D22-6EB8-4A09-A7F7-F6C7A1F000B5) to run a Windows XP Client in Vista x64. Works fine for me. Old games like WWP run just like on a normal PC, as long as you give them enough RAM.
This also has the advantage that you can switch between the game and other applications fairly easy.

every time I try to start WWP, its says screen resolution has to be at least 600x800....tried all the above.....my laptop is an ACER with vista.....shud work really...any other suggestions?
VMWare (and all such programmes) do not have direct access to the vga.
VMWare Workstation 6.5 (not 6.05) supports up to Direct x 9.0c and will take advantage of whatever features the Hosts Video Card supports.

Try another patch, even if you bought your game in eg the US, it might be a European version (make sure you completely reinstall the game before applying a different patch)

Ok.... so, from what everybody posted here its clear that WWP wont work on vista that has Intel chipset - like in my case (on a dell inspiron 1525)... which of course it blows.... so i installed the virtual PC from microsoft with windows XP on it....
WWP starts up but when i start the game i can not control my mouse! it goes wild! - but only when i load the mission :) ... not to mention that even if i start the virtual PC in full screen, the game will be displayed in the middle of the screen in a smaller window....
do you now that can I do? at least to control the mouse, the small window doesnt bother me that much.....
thanks!

its funny, you would think all this stuff would help (by the way thanks for trying) but no, Worms world party still does not work with any of these changes, why does wndows vista have to be so annoying?!
But I have a new solution LISTEN UP TEAM17: create a ALL new WORMS WORLD PARTY II-for windows vista
It's not Vista's fault you're trying to run a game that was originally designed for a pretty badly written O/S..

The most likely cause to that is some program stealing W:A's focus (or, popping up a dialogue box in English ;))
Try closing all open programs (including antivirus, instant messenger (such as MSN), firewalls, etc). If it works after that, enable them one at a time until you find the culprit. Then, either don't use that program, or search in that program's option for an "always on top" or "show above other windows" or "steal focus" option (or something along those lines; usually relating to pop-ups) and disable it.

Yo!
I made a thread concerning my problem, but it hasn't shown up yet... so I might as well post my problem in this one;
You see... I've had my WWP games for more than 8 years now and I have played it on various different machines with different systems both XP and Vista (and 98 I actually think)
And I've only experienced a few problems on Vista like the colour thing many people seem to have been troubled with... but now, now something weird has oocurred on this very computer (which is running Vista) it has worked very fine until yesterday... now when I try to open it I get an error saying that "the instruction 0x004fe0f9 refers to memory at 0x000000000
Error couldn't read
It might be this "Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x00000000 in 32-bit code (0x004fe0f9)."
But since I'm running a danish version of Windows as well as the game I'm not sure how it would be described in english
Does anyone know how I can fix that?
Your help would be appreciated.

WWP doesn't natively support a controller. If you really want to use a controller for the game (and I can't imagine why you would) you'll want to find a little program called Joy2Key which allows you to map keyboard commands to a gamepad.

TO GET WWP TO WORK on vista(maybe 7) and for ATI users, install the 9.8 drivers, it works!
and dont check compatibility mode or it will crash when you create a team
also i had to reinstall the 9.8 drivers for them to work i ran setup.exe in C:\Program Files\ATI\CIM\Bin64 and installed them again but if it works for you the first time you dont need it
also theres fixes on the team 17 WWP forum if you have bad colors black screen etc
if it worked for you copy paste this somewhere so people know
