This is the first new worms game I've seen in years that actually looks like the people working on it give a damn about what they're doing! Almost all the recent (2d) games seem like rushed watered down remakes of old games with all sorts of features missing.
This game has online play, it has some new game modes (racing, forts), it has all of my favorite weapons that have been missing in some games lately (holy hand grenade, super sheep, concrete donkey, parachute), it has some interesting sounding new weapons like the magnet, boomerang, lightening strike (which can bring dead worms back to life from their gravestones) and the buffalo (which i think might not be entirely new but i never played a game that had it). The new weapons don't seem like just slightly different versions of old weapons. Some of my favorite features from the not-so-great 3d version are in this, like hats and victory dances. I really liked the graphical style and physics of the first Open Warfare and this seems to be just as good from what I can tell, if not slightly nicer. The map editor is back. The backgrounds are varied and interesting (and mostly all new).
I sort of feel like I'm advertising the game here, but I've been a worms fan since I first played the demo for Worms 1 on PC over an entire christmas break before worms actually came out that year. I played Armageddon for hours and hours and hours in college against all my friends on my PC. We'd have parties at our place just to play Worms. But I've felt like the series has been going downhill since Armageddon because the the 3d games removed the simplicity that let my friends that don't normally play games get right into it and the newer 2d games didn't have enough customization or weapons or options or the physics were shoddy.
The first Open Warfare felt like a port of the first worms with a nice facelift. I felt like it was almost an experiment by the team to see what they could do on PSP. This second one actually seems like the team are taking it seriously and trying to do something new and interesting without breaking the mold of what made the old games fun. I personally can't wait to play this game. Keep it up Team 17!
