View Full Version : possible solution to WA colour prob under Vista !
get http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=82101 [win9x] or http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsvista/aa905072.aspx [vista]
run the "compatibility Administrator"
click the bottom item in the left list "New Database(1)"
up the top hit "fix"
fill in appropriate info with the path pointing to the location of your WA.exe file.
hit next
for "Compatibility Fixes" tick "PaletteRestore"
hit next
hit finish
--------
you will need to run the "compatibility Administrator" and click the bottom item in the left list "New Database(1)" and choose the program from the list then hit "RUN" up the top every time you want to play.
edit: i've tested this under windows XP and found that if im in a game roping around etc. and then hit ctrl-alt-delete, the palette would get screwed when the game was restored... this solved that issue for me, but since i hardly ever force the game to minimize i couldn't care much about this fix.

EDIT: heres another possible solution to the problem.

If there was a franpa alert that said "ultimate ***age", I would use that.
Finally, franpa does something useful. I'll PM this thread to thomasp and AT.

Well I tried to install it on Vista, and it says the .NET Framework 1.1 is needed (this shouldn't be necessary as .NET 3.0 comes with Vista and is fully backwards compatible with .NET 2.0 and 1.1, but alas this program seems crap).
So I installed .NET 1.1 and then this program. I followed the instructions and ran WA.
The colours are now worse than they were before. Nice try, but this doesn't work.

The universe re-opens and spews out a few additional franpa alerts. ;)

The .NET frameworks are NOT backwards-compatible. They are different versions with completely different interior design.
Franpa, I don't have Windows Vista, but I did try the fix you claim works on Windows XP, and it did not work for me. Can you prove it works for you somehow; perhaps with a video camera?

While they are not 100% guaranteed to work with previous versions, most of the time they do. Try it if you can find the right applications - on Vista, almost all .NET 1.1 and .NET 2.0 applications run perfectly fine without installing their respective frameworks.
i never guaranteed it would work =\
spell checker is acting gay =\ it isn't working in this text box for fast reply =\ DAMN YOU FF 2.0.0.3

i assume now that vista handles compatibility differently to windows XP home 32-bit SP2 and that yes im sure this only solves the issue with the palette being screwed when display mode changes unexpectedly... thus it may not be that helpful except for for when say your virus scanner pops up a message asking for updates or something like that that force the game to minimize.
wait... why is this a sticky o_O did it help some people ?
That was me who requested for it to be stickied... whoops. I thought you'd tried it and it actually works. Someone had to do this:
http://nsrt.edgeemu.com/images/franpa-alert/franpa-code-orange.png
i had edited my first post a few times to explain the level of testing that i had done with this and would like to point out that i called it a "possible" solution.

Not sure whats wrong with everyone else, works perfectly for me. Thanks.
And you're running vista?

Worked absolutely perfectly for me.
I'm running Vista, with an ATI Mobility Radeon x1400 card, it was colour glitching every time I entered any game, even game recordings - but franpa's method worked perfectly, thanks man.
DragonQ, just download the 1.1 framework...
My laptop didnt come with it either, but you can just download it, no harm done.
I did ages ago, this doesn't work for me, as I said.

Well, evidently it works for some people and doesn't for others. So I guess I didn't completely waste the Critical Error. ;)
The intro is good now, but the game still won't load when i do a new game.. how to fix this? I'm using vista..

Trust me, it already is. ;)
The only way to get rid of this bug is by opening C:\Team17\Worms Armageddon, the folder where your game is. If this folder is closed (i cant understand why) the graphic bug appears. It's the easiest way on vista to play this game without any problem. And during the game if u close the game folder, the graphic bug will reappear.
Voila I hope it will help !
Let me know if this method worked for vista users

Wow. Vista is absurd. You have to have Windows Explorer open to the WA directory? Or is it that you have to run the original WA.exe instead of using a shortcut?
Wow. Vista is absurd.
Until alot more games are made for it, it is worthless "upgrading" . I have seen reviews on Tom's hardware for example. it is a slow buggy OS and XP will do fine thankyou:)

No, you actually have to open the directory where your w:a is installed. If its done it doesnt matter if you play with the shortcut or the .exe in the directory.
Yeah its absurd :D

My problem was solved by adding the SlowFrontEndWorkaround_on.reg values to the registry. They're found in the Worms Armageddon directory with the newest patch.
Yeah i find it works some times too. But it seems not constant on my Vista :S. Sometimes it works sometime its not, wonder why...

i have WWP running on vista w/ an ati 1100. it was color glitching like crazy and randomly too, until i manually opened the security settings, and gave the windows user "Everyone" full control. I run in Windows 95 Compatability mode, with all the compat settings ticked. seems to work fairly well, aside from the fact that terrain isn't randomly generating properly. i've yet to figure that one out. vista likes to make everything read only on my machine as well, regardless what services i try stopping, blah blah blah. there has to be a permissions issue somewhere. dunno if this helps anyone else, ymmv. :)
read only is done on purpose :P its how stuff is done since windows XP. (search the microsoft site for info on how it all works)
Well, this fix got the game started, but the menus where slower than they should be. Then the game crashed in team creation mode, but that happened when I tried to play a fanfare and I heard the cd spinning, the CD is VERY scratched so I'm blaiming the crash on that.

Is there any version of the downloadable for Vista x64?
Friend of mine is another success story for the "Open up the Worms folder to get rid of Vista's colour bug" idea. It's ridiculous but at least it's easy to fix.
i updated the links on the first page :)

Thread unstuck due to information now being out-of-date (an official release of the drivers is now available, and the fix falls into update-your-drivers FAQ category).
Edit: did I understand right that the new nVidia drivers fix this problem too?
im unsure, tho i dont mind you un stickying this ;) if you saw above i said i saw no reason for it to stay stickied.
W:A works perfectly well on my Windows Vista, however the intro is slow, like in the WWP days, and I can't minimize the frontend, or else it crashes, any fixes known for these two issues?
I've tried your fix franpa, but it won't let me run WA.exe from the program because apparently I lack administrative rights.
I'm using windows vista with my administrator user account.

quote from WWP forum section
On 640x480 resolution WWP runs just fine on Vista. If I set the resolution to 800x600 or 1024x768 the colors are all messed up
If i use any compatibility mode, the problem with the color is the same. Playing on 640x480 is hard and annoying :(
Have the exact same problem as all of you here, tried all compatibility options, all resolutions in-game and windows desktop.. and even that idea of leaving the WWP folder open.. no luck
NOTHING WORKS!
I too have an nVidia gfx card - with latest driver (162.22) seems like this is common with most vista problems here!
any other possible solutions?
P.S since that fix (database stuff) colours are now screwed in 640*480.. was worth the try though

I was wondering, with me I recently tried WA on my new vista machine and whenever I play all the colours are fine. Its just once the game is over and it returns to the menu, its all 2bit colours. If I manage to go back everything is back to normal. Is this the same problem that the rest of you are having or am I having somthing different?
With this Registry Fix mentioned, the first game on my machine runs fine!
The second has the weird graphics!

Got WA working in 640x480 with XP Intel 946GZ drivers, all other modes appear to have the colour problem except when loaded from explorer directory.
Well I shall miss Windows Aero, however I can't do without WA!
I tested all possible fixes that can be found here and some more...
--- Final working solution for me ---
Compability mode Windows 95
with all setting options on
AND
the game folder open while playing
I have Vista 64, and I use the "open the folder containing WA" and it works just fine. Wanting to make it simpler, I tried making a batch file that first opens the worms folder and then starts the game. Now the file works just fine...
@echo off
start explorer C:\MicroProse\Worms Armageddon
cd C:\MicroProse\worms armageddon
start wa.exe
... but this does not seem to correct the color issue. Now I just have worms running with randomly bad colors WHILE I also just happen to have the folder open. I am really confused because this should technically do the same as just opening the folder. Any helpful insight would be greatly appreciated.
THanks, SQ
cd C:\MicroProse\worms armageddon
that line isn't needed unless the line above that fails :/

Uh, yes it is. How else would the command prompt know where to find WA.exe?
right, wasn't paying attention.
I have 2 solution that worked for me, sometimes when vista shows wrong color. Press esc and minimice the game and get back in game, now sow correct color. After installed latest ATI driver for my Vista 32 ( DNA and from ATI ) i get black grey glitches in screen. Solution was change the resoltion in worms. IT have to be diffrend as in windows.

This trick seems to work for 90% in Windows 7 build 7000 as well. It's a bit stubborn though, might not work always on the first game load... Quitting and rehosting a game usually does the trick and then it seems to be stable for several games - though in my last game the rope icon above a worm turned purple :S Also don't try to minimize, or the palette is screwed up again
Big bugger though that I can't seem to run Wormkit - any solution to that perhaps?
-> tested with ancient ati radeon 9600Pro
edit: make that 60% workable :S now all the sudden it keeps giving LSD colours

Tried it also, this is with the laptop. 0% work.
I think it was way way better working on Windows 7 build 6801 where I had no colour problems at all.
(Laptop is using the Intel GMA985)
I've not tried using the intel drivers yet, I will probably try
