This isn't unusual.
A switch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_switch) has no routing functionality, it does bridging (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridging_(networking)). And a router (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Router) sometimes is only is a computer with only two network devices.

I know, though I have never seen a router with less than 4 ethernet hubs.
And you can cheaply add another ethernet adapter in a computer that acts as a router.
BTW, seeing as a switch does not allocate the locations in the network, this might be the problem when hosting/joining Wormnet.
Can you do portforwarding on a switch? :-/

I could take a picture of the back side of my computer. :)

I am sure the switch has nothing to do with his problems.
And there is nothing to configure, too.

I was speaking of dedicated routers in small stand-alone boxes.

If your computer and router are on the same subnet (their IP begins with the same three period-separated numbers), then it's the same as having a router directry connected to a computer. In this case, just ignore that you've extra hardware between the two.
I've seen a router with only 1 Ethernet port, and no wireless! How crazy is that

Token ring (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Token_ring)?
PLIP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallel_Line_Internet_Protocol)?
SLIP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SLIP)?
or even
FDDI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FDDI)?
