View Full Version : Worms is finally out! - And what do you think?
Well. I played a little bit now. I don't have Xbox Live Gold, but will get it soon.
My first impressions are simple. The graphics are really great. The music is, as I think too dark but it's ok. The physic is also good and the worms just look so cute, as never before.
But there is one more thing(I am not Steve Jobs). I love the ninja rope, and I think it's nice in this title, BUT how can I control this. It's pretty hard for me to get only used to this kind of roping with the analog stick or the D-Pad. I didn't come over one edge. But I think (and hope), that the time will help me...
But simply: The game is perfect for me, it runs great and it is really the perfect XBLA game.
Now, whats your opinion?
P.S. Is it only my fault or are the controls a little bit slow. I mean, when I press jump, my worm takes some time to jump and also when he moves. This doesn't feel that great. Also with the zoom.
Apart from the lack of a single player game i think its ok, i woud have loved some missions and stuff.
I dont know if to buy it yet it seams kinda expensive, £6.80 when you think of how little you get compared to WWP and Armageddon plus i allready have it on the psp anyway... but then again its 2D worms on the Xbox :D

I'm definitely getting it, even though I've got W2, WA and WWP already. Although I have 1600 free points for upgrading to Gold when they sent me an offer, so I don't actually have to pay..
I do think it's worth it though, it's nice to be able to play with friends and thanks to the headsets the embarrassment of being killed by poke is taken to a whole new level.
One question though, is a point-blank shot with a shotgun supposed to cause 255 damage or was that a bug?

More than likley that was 25 damage to the enemy and 5 damage to your worm.

I considered that, but I'm fairly sure the number was completely red as opposed to 25 red and 5 blue, and I only had the one worm on my team standing there.
Only played one game so far, if it happens again I'll report back.
EDIT: Ok, just tried it again, it IS a 25 and a 5 seperately. I didn't realise the enemy damage showed as red as well, I thought it'd be whichever colour the team is. I'm assuming that's intentional.
Graphics are really nice.
But...
I think there are not enought weapons, the ninja ropes controls sucks and it's not caused by the analogic controleur.
Levels are too small, but we can't move esealy so...it's ok. 3 themes for a light version it's ok and it's possible to add some with updates.
The fight during too longer and it's really boring with those basic weapons. It's the same as Worms 1... good on his time but boring now...
We cant't custom the number of banana bomb...no flying sheep...no holly grenades...no cows... those one really missing.
Maybe there are some special weapons in case, but i don't think...
No bananas in classified mode...
I think i wiil never play again at Worms HD... 800pts for 30mn... because now it's really boring to play. need some add on and update for ropes.
I would not have to buy it the closed eyes...and test it before the demo...
I am very disappointed, I wanted to play so much there on line.
I play all weeks since few years at WWP, i will continue...
Still waiting for a WWP 2 with new map in 2D HD !!! ( 3D for worms... i really don't like).

The achivements seam easy but who's gonna complain at that, im gonna have to get live gold again and get playing online as mine expired last month.
If your listing team 17 how about a port of WWP or Amrageddon to xbox live? people would go crazy for it!
I think it's great and really funny. But I miss some important weapons like the holy grenade etc.. Also the fuel... is not the fuel! i mean, when it explodes doesn't left some fire which could damage other worms. it explodes like a normal grenade or bomb...:D

There is, as I think no fire in the game, right?
No fire from fuels and no fire weapons. This is really bad, as I think.

Yeah it's a real bummer the fuel doesn't explode into flame anymore, nor do crates when you blow them up.
I do like the challenge getting used to the weapons, because they handle differently than in the computer series, they are heavier and so are the worms. Also the AI is smarter, doing a fire punch in mid-air slamming me into a mine, blowing me into another one. Amazing.
In challenge four now, and I won with only one worm left... Gonna try MP on friday. Didn't have the time. I think I will like it even more than now if I can manage to master the weapons :)

Worms Fans know all the weapons and even these things like flames are not in it. And the missions are kinda simple too.
Could have been something like in Worms 3 D.
Like: Fly with your jetpack from this place to that place throug the geomitry.
Or win with your Team against the CPU only with Grenades.
Or get over two holes with the ninja rope.
I don't think this would be too hard to manage, but I think it would be much more fun alone. Also you would get practise with the weapons much much more.
But it's a good game. Even if there could have been soooooooo much more.
I didn't play on Live until now, because I don't have Gold in the moment, but I hope I will not have so many crashes....
And every time somebody comes with these facts, the only thing some users or the Team 17 Stuff tell is, that the game is more "friendly" to new gamers. I really don't want to critizise you all, but in many ways this isn't true. To get used to the rope is so damn hard, that I think to get two more weapons in the game like the Baseball Bat and perhaps the holy handgrenade wouldn't be as hard to get used to 2 more weapons. Also, why aren't there flames. I don't think that flames are so complicated to understand ;)
They help to really have more tactics in the game and they help the game to be more logical.
I mean why in the hell are there signs of flames on the barrels if they just explode without any fire?
Also I think that a new gamer would buy the game faster if he reads

with the ninja rope being difficult, we really need chutes and bungee to get about the map. The grave damage is more explosive than on wa or wwp too.
Overall, I think it's rather nice. Now then, I must say it does feel like a downgrade after getting used to all the features in Worms Armageddon and WWP. On the other hand, it's refreshing to a play a worm match where all the worms don't have immediate access to the entire map due to an insane ninja rope and don't instakill worms with baseball bat or similar weapons. I'm not sure how you much freedom you have if you master the ninja rope in Worms for 360, but so far I haven't seen anyone scaling cliffs or anything yet... I'm hoping the rope is more limited so people will be forced to do more ranged fights.
I think people are overreacting when they talk about the missing weapons. The game plays just fine, and the majority of missing weapons are imbalanced super weapons anyway.
There are a few other things which bug me though. I really wish they had included the option to have alliances. I feel 2vs2 is a lot more balanced than 1vs1vs1vs1. I hate the aiming reticle, it's way too large, especially when zooming out. The achievements are very dull... there's no special challenges to try to achieve, all of them except for one (kill 3 worms in one shot) is just about playing the game long enough.
I'm not sure if I understand the point behind the leaderboards. It seems the Weekly/Monthly/Overall lists are all about having the most damage and the most wins. In other words, having more playtime than other players. Having a win/lose ratio with a minimum of # played matches would seem more interesting and fair.
Anyone know what the TrueSkill list is about?
Even though I'm used to playing Worms with mouse'n'keyboard it's no problem playing on the 360 pad. The game plays very smooth with the pad. The only problem is getting hang of ninja roping... I feel like I have to learn it all over again with the lack of a keyboard (analog stick feels too "loose" and the d-pad on the 360 controller is a joke)
Anyway, overall I think it's a must buy considering its low price. The game has flaws but it's still a lot of fun. Although if players already have access to one of the PC versions and friends to play with, there's little reason to get the 360 version.

After you play long enough, there will be 3 worms with low health in one area and you'll kill them all at once. I think even that one is more about time played than skill.
I'm not too upset with the selection for $10. And I'm willing to spend a few more dollars on DLC that might include more terrain art, weapons, voices, etc.
Honestly..I'm a huge worms fan and I was waiting for this to play with
other friends. I was let down...it's like a watered down version of the game
with the best features all taken out. 1/2 the weapons...little to none game
customization. I was looking foward to making Sh0ppa and prorope games
but that isn't going to happen.
I really hope they fix this..cause I'm really dissapointed in it. :(

I think it's a very nice release. It is very close to the Classic worms setup. Then again, I've played worms since the very original worms, and I love every one of them. It's kind of like Original Worms revisited, but with a few added features and a big visual overhaul.
Outside a more classic weapon-set, I'm glad to see that they still incorporated a few gaming aspects that only later worm games have. For instance, the themes where you have indestructable land masses as opposed to destructable ones. A lot of worms vets got used to that stuff in the late releases, and either never played a worms game old enough to realize those are new features; or thought it was always there.
Camera and visuals, I can't really complain. It's sharp and high-def (where the camera focus is on). The backgrounds have that depth-of-field effect with a bit of unfocused look. They also have a good amount of Animation in them. That really throws me because I've played many a worms game with no background animation. (The water animated down there, but that's it). In all actuality, the focus effect is a good thing because it's the main thing that keeps the background from being too distracting. I can tune that stuff out and concentrate on my aim and power.
I can't wait to play more of this game. The classic weapon set is really allowing me to focus more on being resourceful with the many ways you can use the classic weapons. The new Worms games have made me so soft with these classic tools that I'm no longer as good with them as I used to be. I can sort of kick myself for losing touch with them and using too many new *easier to use* weapons, in their place. It used to be so incredibly satisfying performing perfect setups with expertly (and luckily) placed shots. Not to mention, remembering uses for certain items I stopped using with the new stuff.
The flame barrel thing is strange, but I can get used to its new function. Better to have a setup that plays great online, than to risk a dodgy one which might bring problems for a first foray onto the XBLA model.
If there is one thing I think is missing, is the cool Mission mode. I know many early Worms games never had this; but I felt that Mission mode really did add a great *friendly to beginners* mode to the game. The challenges were cool, and each mission almost felt like you were playing a different kind of game, than the last. (a testament to the variety of gameplay worms holds). It even has that addictive (one more level) aspect to it which should be perfect for the XBLA model. I wonder if they are planning on adding something like that as a Content Download?

Now that you bring that back up, it did occur to me that the music is definitely darker than one would think for a classic worms game. I do remember W:A, but I also remember the earlier ones, too.
The music is great, no doubt. It almost has that Tom Clancy game intensity. While it presents a very professional arrangement, it's very serious sounding. I guess I'm used to the Classic worms being a bit more tongue-n-cheek or whimsical in its musical selection.

I already shelled out the 10$ for this game figuring, hey, if it's 2d, it's gonna be a great worms game, right? Well.. I guess not. somehow they've managed to give us LESS themes, LESS interaction, and LESS weapons. I mean.. WTF really?
I know you're listening Team17 - Why would you do this to us? The XBL game size max is 512 mb now, you're checking in at 42mb. So.. How about some 16bit 44khz sounds? how about some of the weapons you left out that were in WWP? How bout more than 3 themes? How bout some artistic landscapes like the dreamcast one had? How about alot of things..
XBL has made it clear that I can't get a refund for this.. But I can promise you without some updates to make this game better after shelling out cash for this and those HORRID 3d games you dared to call worms, I won't EVER buy another one of your products.
Please, please, please.. Don't leave thousands and thousands of oldschool worms fans with a bad taste in their mouth. Fix this. Make it the product it should be. If not.. Wow.

Microsoft increased the limit to 150mb, not 512mb (you're probably mixing up with the new memory cards which will be 512mb), and Worms was made months before the increased limit so blame MS regarding the low limit, not Team17.
I agree that there should have been some more features, but just remember that is a budget title and designed for a more casual environment.

Overall I would rate it and 8, or possibly a 7.5 out of 10. I'm minusing about 1.5 for the errors happening trying to connect to online games and 1 for the lack of fun factor compared to WA (though I dobelieve it is very fun in its own right and well worth the 10$, seeing as how it is better than most xbla games)
I haven't played too much yet, but I'm happy so far. It's just like I the original Worms game I'm used to. Since I haven't played any of the newer iterations, the lack of weapons doesn't seem like a lack of weapons to me.
I do wish I had a couple of more characters for my team name, though.
I can't wait to see what the new content will be. I hope we aren't going to have to wait many months for this. I also hope Team 17 keeps on supporting this game long after it's out.
Yeah the online connectivity is ridiculous, it causes a freeze all the time I try to start one. Can't have but one banana bomb. Can't have any weapons that do a decent amount of damage up close(the max is 30 from the firepunch). I'm REALLY dissapointed by this game, but I'll just go back to W:A like I have since every release after it(except WWP)

I think its great. the first live arcade game worth playing more than once. The weapons may be cut back from other versions but I think all the important strategic ones are there .The rope does seem a bit different to use ,feels stiffer. I had some issues getting into international games for the first hour or so but it seemed to work itself out .
I named a worm pubis and they decided that was immoral !! thats a bit over the top if you ask me but I'm sure they're MS guidelines .
Good work guys I rekon youve done a good job.
Loving the game for its "back to basics" routine. Proper leaderboards, beautiful graphics if you view it in HD, and proper stratagy back into the gameplay due to the lesser amount of weapons.
Still my niggles:
Music - No Worm Song in any way shape or form? Oh dear. Even games like Blast/4/WP had the "tune" in there, be it title screen or in-game. One looping track (and not a new one, mind) feels a bit limited. Definatly add more music, as Worms has had some great background stuff over the years (or a Worm Song too, new wormers need to learn the stories of Boggy B!) Almost criminal to have so few voice banks, but of course you can't do everything in 50MB. Just hope the dl content doesnt cost much, especially as it seems these are the same old banks from yesteryear.
Weapons - I thought the least of my problems was not having keyboard control, so I'd be fearing rope is useless. However it proves to work, and as I said earlier the limited amount of weapons actually makes things more intresting. But some really need to be in here. Parachute or Bungie, a more acurate homing...thing (like the pigion), surely the flying/swimming sheep/concrete donkey/Old Lady/Mad Cow wouldn't have hurt this game? Full Wormage doesn't feel fun when the only super weapon is the banana. Don't be so afraid, the old weapons were hilarious. I'd also vote for the baseball bat. Or gravity, or fast walk....
Minor Differences - The worms themselves at first felt slower to control, then I noticed how some weapons do different amounts of damage now, or not being able to back flip onto a ledge I know for certain I'd be able to in WA/WWP. Minor stuff for a person whom played too much WA, and I got used to the new mechanics quickly, just stating my thoughts.
Definatly needs a patch to sort out hosting/joining problems. 3 games out of about 8 I hosted tonight crashed my 360, and 5 of 10 matches I joined all quit as soon as 4 players were ready to start the game (most probably the host leaving due to a freeze).
But overall, its the same old Worms I love, hope the team supports the game for a long time to come. Add some more (harder) achievements also ;)
some server problems and a freeze when hosting glitch, these can be fixed. Other than that, quality game.

i downloaded the trial yesterday and paid for the full game quickly afterwards - i am very pleased with the release, its exactly what i was expecting... had a couple of online games and a couple with the mrs on the couch next to me... its classic worms fun.
its brilliant, the weapons aren't silly powerful which i believe is a good move, and when you do get something like the banana bomb its a treat to use since its so rare...
it looks wonderful... a few hickups with the sound and some response issues it seems - which hopefully will be patched in the future... all in all though its a very fine release in the worms saga... and i'll be playing it for a long time to come...
Hi, long-time reader, first time poster.
Really liking this game, good old skool Worms fun, and the sort of thing me and friends will play regularly over XBL. I don't necessarily think anything is missing, although there are some things from the later versions that would be 'nice to have' (I'm a big fan of the baseball bat!).
My only problem with it, and this is a very personal one, is that I'm an impatient sod, so I tend to mash the 'A' button to skip replays and get to my turn. Getting over enthusiastic with this approach has caused me to bazooka myself on a few occasions. I guess I'm just going to have to learn to wait!
So yeah, money well spent, and I can see many late nights of online Worms fun.
Here are my two cents.
I like it. It is just what I'm after really. A multiplay party game. There are some niggles that I don't like, and after playing half a dozen games online, I decided that people really don't know how to play. People were, for example, using homing missiles to shoot someone 2 inches away, and in direct line of sight.
List of things that I think should be sorted.
Starting positions: Sometimes worms where starting on top of mines. In some cases, actually dieing before any turns were being taken. That can't be intended, and if it is, I'd really like to here how they came up with that design desicion.
AI is a little dumb: Shooting a bazooka at a worm they are stood next to. Dropping dynamite, jumping and landing next to the dynamite, and standing there for 4 seconds, instead of making another attempt to get away.
Also, I agree with shoebox. I am impatient, too. I press 'a' alot, and ended up wasting a few turns and blowing myself up a few times, but that is my fault.
As for weapons, I think the choice is great. It encourages you to use skilled weapons. I was playing one game where I was one side of the map, they were the other side, and we were chucking grenades and bazookas at each other, something that is alot more satisfying when you make a hit rather than lobbing a banana bomb into the air and hoping.
I played really long today and the game is getting worser and worser.
There is no atmoshere.
There are many bugs, and yes that are bugs.
I got two games where (as an example) a sound of a worm shouted every second. I had to finish it. It was horrible. Also three times a worm got stuck in some places. Nu jump, no jetpack. Nothing helped. Also a worm stayed in the air of an great explosion.
The last thing is that some worms of the enemy just stayed at their position and did nothing.
But the bugs aren't sooo bad, the bad thing for me is something other.
I can never really see what is happening with the worms. The explosions are to big and the worms fly like I would never think. Most time they don't fly anyway. Even if there is a grenade on their heads. lol
Also the physic is horrible. Perhaps this all is like Worms 1, I never played it. But why is this game like Worms 1 if there are so damn better titles of worms out.
I mean, these grenades they fly and get on the ground. Boom, they don't even role on a 50 oder 60 degrees place...(sorry for my english, I hope you can understand me^^).
And the ninja rope...Why is it in the game? I can't handle nothing with it.
And why isn't there any cool music when you win or loose. This is like a game (not the graphics) from 1995 or so.
I don't feel happy when I win against the AI. Where is the nice music. And why is there only one title. There was some space. Or not? I mean it was 44 MB or something like that.
Well, the game is fun with real persons, but the rest is....

Where are my gazillion options to do really evil things to poor little worms. Where are all the fun challenges? Where are those special, non generated maps (boats, tanks, fortresses, all those good things)? Why is my worms team limited to 4 instead of 8? Where's the bungee rope, driller and parachute? And...And...there's so much more really...
What's up with worms suddenly sliding off edges they can jump on? Is this some kind of ploy to make worms more immobile or to have them rely on the rope and jetpack to get out of places they used to be able to get out of on their own?
What happened to the ninja rope anyway, it's practically unusable now...okay i'll grant that i may lack the skill to properly operate it on the xbla version, but still...
I'd much rather have had a boxed port of WWP with updated gfx for the X360 than this heavily watered-down version. I'd have been more than happy to put down 50 euro's for that.
It's gone back to the "core" gameplay of worms. uhuh...right...
Of course, if my WWP still worked i wouldn't have bought the xbla version straight away in the first place.
It's partly my fault for not following this more closely and just blindly trusting xbla worms to (at least mostly) be the worms i've always known. Maybe i'm more angry with myself over buying this without checking around. Maybe it's just me, no matter how hard i tried i never really liked the 3D worms either, I'm just very dissapointed with this release. I really hoped i could get back to some full-blown wormyness.
Okay, i guess i'm done blowing off steam now, maybe i'll try getting WWP working decently on winXP again.
To Team17 i say, if you put in what's supposed to have been in it in the first place through downloadable content, i'll probably curse you for falling for the whole micropayment thing and pulling a Lumines Live on us, but i'll buy it all and at least i'll be a happy worms player again after that. So until then i bid thee adieu.

...No, it didn't. Worms 1 had roughly the same weapons as Worms on XBLA does, and it had no missions, no pre-drawn levels, no deathmatches, and very little customisation at all compared to later series.
Fine Fine, but what about the worms...
They feel like stones on crack. They move slow and have to think before jumping? :confused:
And why is this A Button for shoting. After a while it will be fine, but I lost some missions only because of this simply thing: " Hey let's jump over there...Boom!"
And really, the argument, that was also the background idea for the game isn't true.
This game is not more friendly to new gamers then Worms 2 or Worms Armageddon. And why?
The "missions" don't help new players with all the weapons. I mean for new players this is also a really big weapon arsenal. And the most players don't want to read this manuel in there, even if its short and nice.
I know, that Team17 can't do these big changes to Worms with an simply or even big update. They can't add Weapons. It was told often and I don't know why so many users here don't know this...
But they can help the game to be a little bit better. With more voicepacks and more themes and some bugfixes.
But Team17 wanted to make this kind of game, it should be like this, and so it is.
Like i said, i should have been more informed about the xbla version. I set my hopes to high and got very dissapointed.
And while Worms 1 might not have had many more features than the xbla one, it did have more. All the others are indeed from further and even better iterations.
@scorp 46: yeah, i agree with you on the worms front and adjustable control schemes are a must for any console game, xlba or otherwise.
Getting to know the worms arsenal wasn't done by reading any manual. It's just way too much more fun to explore it through trial and error. I still remember my first holy handgrenade explosion. I never expected such a blast, let alone the sound effect. *see the worms fly* I almost died laughing. ahh, good times...
Anyway I've been ranting way too much about it already. They decided to make this and i'm really not happy with how limited it is. So i'm just hoping they'll make second one and basically just port WWP, which is to date still the best worms ever, into the HD era. And not by making it 3D please.

I'm definitely up for another worms on Xblive. Still, I played Worms after my normal Phantasy Star session, and I was hooked on fighting matches.
I also setup an *Artillery* scheme which basically was Infinite Bazookas, 5 Grenades, and nothing else. Nothing like changing the settings so that a specific weapon is the *Must get* weapon. In this case, the Grenade was the hot commodity, so it was interesting. The Level Generator is pretty nice as well. I dig the interface to it.
The Ninja Rope while being a bit stiff is still quite usable. It really finds its home in *Cavern* levels. (Different Map styles like Caverns, two islands, etc. were not in existance until Worms AGA Director's Cut released). But more than swinging and attacking, I tend to use the *other* strategy. Safely trigger and clear out mines to either clear a ground navigation path; or remove a possible threat should the enemy think to try to hit or blow my friendly worms into one (or two).
One thing, I would love to see, in whatever next worms is the option to control the chances of Weapon/Health Crates and stuff. Or even turn certain crates off. A classic Artillery Mode gets no health, so I would like to create that. Maybe the option to select what items and weapons are possible from crates, in that scheme. (That way, you can have the worms starting with a setup, but have chosen weapons/items only accessible from boxes.)

After getting over the multiplayer bug (posted about it in another thread) I'm really liking this game. This is my first Worms game and must have played hours on end yesterday with a friend. Very addictive. From some of the other threads I'm guessing the old Worms had bigger maps + more worms but I actually think the size of the map and the 4 worms are just right.
About 4 games in I started getting annoyed at the tarzan ninja roping but then realized you could actually limit the number of each weapon. :) When the multiplayer lock up bug is finally patched I can't think of much else to complain about.
The graphics are so sharp that I can't wait to see some of the themes that had to be cut to make the 50MB size limit (please don't overcharge for it like Lumines Live). Along with many others here I do wish more themes/sounds are released but taken in the proper context, this *is* an Live Arcade game, what was given to us is more than adequate. If games like Dig Dug and Pac Man are going to be 400 MS points then how can Worms not be worth 800 MS points?
One suggestion for the next update Team 17. Could you possibly add alliances? I would love to get some 2 vs. 2 games instead of every man for themselves. Also, could we remap the buttons? I think this is the only Xbox game where the A button is *not* jump. :P

If they hadn't have released this version of worms for XBLA, people would have been constantly moaning about the lack of worms on said platform.
If they went ahead and released it (which they clearly did), people would moan that despite having strict file-size limits it doesn't have every single feature that's ever existed in any worms game in it, therefore it's a total waste of money. And that its bug-ridden despite having spent many months in testing. Surely it would have even more bugs if it was released after just 2 weeks in testing??
And for the record, I haven't played this new worms game, mainly because I don't own an XBox 360.
But then you have no idea, how the game plays.
It's not only about weapons. No, it's much more about the physics. And this isn't a "problem" where size matters.
But Team17 did better some time ago. Why can't they just do again. The graphics are phenomanal. Why not the dumb physics?

The biggest problems are things that are changed that shouldn't have been, like the splash damage and the physics. That has nothing to do with the file-size limits but it has a huge impact on the way the game plays (although only the people who are familiar with the older games would know what's missing from the XBLA Worms).

I think the frustration at the release delays came from the lack of communication and the idiocy of the Microsoft certification process mostly. And of course it is disappointing to see some major bugs still there even when MS was assuring everyone that their stringent certification process was to make sure everything would be perfect, even though we know there's a limit to what internal testing can find.

It's so simple. If you like the physics, weapons, items, names, features, on and on and on in another Worms game then why not just go and play that game? Is there really a point to all the talk of wanting more weapons in this game? They already said no more weapons so if it irritates you then don't buy this game. Had this game been called W2, W:A, or one of the countless other Worms game then I could understand. However, since it's simply Worms for XBLA then there is nothing wrong with new physics, weapon set changes, worm weight, etc.
...No, it didn't. Worms 1 had roughly the same weapons as Worms on XBLA does, and it had no missions, no pre-drawn levels, no deathmatches, and very little customisation at all compared to later series.
...and came on floppy disks that were 880K...
Perhaps Worms 1.5 (Directors Cut) was more comparable perhaps, with over 30 weapons, grafiti mode etc...
