I supose it's about time I made a thread about this.

It's yet another comic project!

No timetraveling cats this time, I promise.;)

Turnus is an action-packed spin-off from Worm Mad's Rooms webcomic ( http://rooms.wurmz.net/ ) following the adventures of Turnus after he drops out of university and gets acidentaly press-ganged into becoming a secret agent for speculative Operations, an underapreciated and underfunded branch of the secret service.

The comic is being writen by Worm Mad (mostly) and myself. I'm doing the drawing.

Here's a couple of un-coloured pages from our first issue:

Very nice!
I like the black & white style with all the large, black areas. The play with the shadows is also great.

Did you draw that with ink?
Keep it up!

Only drawback: the faces look too much like Anime faces for me (except the old guy). :-/

except the old guy

That old guy is *SPOILER*Mr Elevator*SPOILER* which you'd know if you'd read my comic :p

That's your homework, get to it!

Also, the finished comic will be in colour.

Hmm, I seem to be back on the forum. How'd that happen? Anyway, I'd just like to say that philby was my first choice to work with me on this spin-off and, as expected, he's doing a fantastic job. I hope you'll all take the time to read Turnus, when it debuts, later this year.

yup. Inked out in A3.

on paper.

And anime style faces are quite a promenant drawback when you're drawing a manga-style comic.

I've tried to avoid making every character look like a 16 year old girl though. And sometimes the hair isn't even spikey.;)

I don't mind that the faces look too anime style. I mind that everyone looks too similar. :p Hopefully this will improve with the colouring, but still, I couldn't tell who Turnus was if it wasn't for the dialgoue.

Still, nice stuff all around.

Turnus does look different from his apearance in the Rooms webcomic, (especialy his hair), but did I really cange him so much you can't tell him apart from a large flat nosed man with a beard?

Maybe it's the uniform and the shades that's the problem.

Oh well, as you say it'll be easier to tell the diference once they have diferent coloured hair.

That is, I presume you're refering to Turnus and the other agent in the firsrt page. If you're confusing mr Elevator with them we've got some serious problems.:p

Is Turnus wearing a clip-on tie there? If so, fantastic. If not, er, I think you forgot to ink a bit.

Well three at least.

Okay, to be fair you haven't seen the first guy yet so...

Have two improved character designs.

Hot Fuzz
Oh, I hope I get to see that movie soon.
It probably won't be played anywhere in Austria, so I'll have to wait until I can rent it in a video store.
But the translation would suck anyway, so renting the DVD is preferred.

I really find it funny how they changed the promo poster for the US release with fire, additional sunglasses and no Bobby hat.

Wasn't there a sequel planned to "Shaun of the Dead"? I read a funny alternative title somewhere, spoofing some other zombie movie.

Squirminator2k

"Night of the Living Ed"? Just a rumour, I believe. The "sequel" was, and is, Hot Fuzz. It's not really a sequel, either - more of a "same style, different stuff" type thing. I remember reading somewhere that Hot Fuzz was set in the same Universe as Shaun of the Dead, but then the fact that there's a POTENTIAL SPOILER in the POTENTIAL SPOILER later in the movie kind of discounts that.

Thread revive!

Turnus has changed quite drastically since I posted those first pages, thanks mainly to my increasing hatred of my horrible inking, not to mention the genuine critism I got from Supsuper and Bonz.

See for yourself-

http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/5285/page2kr1.th.png (http://img516.imageshack.us/my.php?image=page2kr1.png)

http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/1715/page4hd7.th.png (http://img513.imageshack.us/my.php?image=page4hd7.png)

For a start I'm inking digital now, which is something I thought I'd never do.

You've probably noticed that it's in Black and white now. That's mainly due to something Bonz noted in the first reply. I liked the high contrast look of the lineart, but It lost a lot once it was coloured.

Also holden's hair has gone ridiculous.

Anyway, Turnus is finally back on track, so you can expect to see the first feature-lengh issue later this year.

"Looks like we'll be putting putting!". :p
A case of the old "cat sat on the the mat" trick, I'm afraid.

Anyway, MUCH better. The first page is less overblown than before, and it flows better and all that jazz.
The grey is nice. They was way too much white before.

Most of the word bubbles come too close to the text, especially in the last one. It looks like you're making the bubbles digitally anyway, so it shouldn't be too hard to make them a little bigger. Make sure you can see a band of white around all of the text.

The "Looks like we'll..." bubble is a good example of how they all should look.

I think you should try to keep all of the text half a letter away from the edge.

Also, it might just be a personal peeve, but I always notice whenever the frames of glasses don't go over the ears. :p

Thanks for the feedback.:)

I guess the bubbles could do with being a little bigger, thankfully that's easy to fix thanks to my fancy layers.

As for the glasses, the arms are left off as a stylistic choice, It's suposed to look a little like all the agents have dark glasses for eyes. Non-agent glasses-wearing characters will have the arms on their spectacles.

I like it. It's good. But for some reason I can't fathom, I have this unquenchible urge to colour it.

Worm Mad

I think the reason for that was that it was designed to be coloured. The colour version looked much nicer. The new style is designed to be black and white, so looks better in that format.

Then you're missing the point. The new style is designed to be black and white, and actually suits the darker tone of Turnus (darker than Rooms anyway ;)) pretty superbly. To colour this incarnation would be kind of like colouring an old Detective Noir film. Not impossible, but probably a bit silly.

I'm not saying it needs colour. I just like colouring things in. Or shading them. That's what I spent the most time doing in Fried, and I experimented a fair bit with that, too.

larger bubbles and a pair of armed spectacle to apease pigbuster.
Less white space to reduce ben's mysterious urges.

Not that that's for your benefit mind, as Isaid the non-armed glasses are a stylistic choice and the room's just plain dark.

And that's the very last page I'll be showing here.:p

The only wiki in which I have created something as big as a "new example of trope". (The scene from Lost in which the kid says he needs new batteries for his Gameboy SP. OOPS.)

I'm thinking of adding the trope "Futuristic generic sport".
Which states that all sports in the future will be extremely generic and consist of 2 rules: "GET PLASMATIC BALL IN HOOP!" and "DON'T LET OPPONENTS GET PLASMATIC BALL IN OTHER HOOP!".
And it may also involve using an X-TREEEEEME vehicle, like hover boards.

I believe I need a wittier name for the trope, though.

You're the only person I've ever seen complain about Chemical Plant Zone, Paul. I find it easier and quicker than Casino Nights Zone. CP is just lots of running and jumping, but CN is lots of banging back and forth, in and out around pinball tables, chutes, against bumpers, and has one of the longest boss battles in the game, where you have to come up with a new technique to kill Robotnik. In CP all you have to do is bang him on the head a few times whilst avoiding his blue gunk. CN's more slow-paced, if that's what you mean, but requires more effort, not less, unless you really want to spend more than five minutes completing each of the two levels.

And why did you quote the last post? It's not necessary.

So, Turnus, then!

Paul.Power

The hard part of CPZ is the second half of the second act (everything before that is nice and easy)

However, in the second half or CPZ Act 2, you have:

1. Some moving platforms that shuttle back and forth, itching to drop you onto some spikes.
2. A bunch of rotating blocks that, when you're new to the game, totally screw with you and lead to drownings.
3. A second set of moving platforms that, should you miss, drop you back down to the rotating blocks, only this time the Mega Mack is at full height.
4. A couple of disappearing floor blocks that tend to dump you into a bottomless pit.
5. A third set of moving platforms that dump you into a bottomless pit.
6. A boss with two sets of disappearing platforms that dump you into a bottomless pit, and ammo that, should you get hit, typically flings you into one of said pits.

Casino Night is slow, yes, but I'm not looking to set time records here (indeed, I tend to deliberately dally in the zone because I like it so much). On a typical run-through, I'll pick up at least four lives without even trying thanks to the ridiculous quantities of ring and point bonuses I'll pick up. The boss is nasty until you work out the wall-jump trick, this is true, but at least it doesn't spring any bottomless pits on you. And the only real way to die, the boss aside, is to get squashed by those giant block things.

It should be noted that I am not very good at platform games, and that therefore any sequence of jumps, no matter how trivial, will leave me scratching my head - and tearing my hair out shout failure prove fatal. I can do being bounced around the place randomly by pinball tables, and what's more, I get to admire the scenery while I'm at it.

So, uh, Turnus. It looks really good, yes. Although I still can't get the image of an ice-skating/golf crossover involving poultry out of my head.
