View Full Version : Worms World Map

This is a call for people who would like to join a little project I've been thinking of, since the bigger maps thing was announced:
The Worms World Map.
The idea is simple: 10 people will do a different part of the map, each. This means that there will be a MASSIVE map (9600x3480), consisting in 10 different maps...
It will be done in this way:
Anyone who wants to join will pic a number from this sketch (It's reduced to a 10th part)
http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/8278/templateme2.png
What you do, is a whole normal map, as an island, to be added to the huge map.
The art style is at the choice of anyone. You may use sprites, Paint drawings, or whatever, but it must have the 64 color limit, so a template must be done. If anyone posts one, I would be thankful (ok, I don't know how to :p)
Think of the map as part of a bigger map. If you pick lower islands, consider that there is map above. Try to think of things about other islands
You may exceed the original size a bit, but not too much, since if this is not taken in consideration, the islands could end touching each other.
Try to make your part different from the others. The overall look should be a huge place with different "countries". Each seeming different from the others. Even the gameplay can be different from each one. (small islands, a hollow map, as a cave, etc...)
I hope that this turns to be a good playable map...

Where is this "bigger map" thing announced? could you point me to a reliable post/ thread indicating so?
Thanks :D

i would like to attempt to help, i can't say i'v ever made a map before so ya i'd want to, any theme or anything?
o and i'd want 3
and another question, how do these maps fit together like the thing you showed above they arn't connected, are they?
Here's the link for ye, Karseet: http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=31403
Alex, you might want to be a little more specific with what you want. Would be cool if each map's theme literally reflected the country whoever made it is from. A collection of stereotypes if you will; frogs for the French, hamburgers for the Americans, bad teeth for the Brits... that sort of thing.
Then it would also probably be wise to restrict the maps in what scheme they're made for. If they're general'ish, agree to make them all suitable for Intermediate. If they're roping maps, make sure they all are, so that the indestructible terrain option can be on.
Just a few thoughts.

what I meant is: You have total freedom in your part (to some extent: it should be playable at a normal scheme), to make it your own style, gameplay, and that. Want to make it French (or world-wide stereotypes :p) related? ok. Cows? nice... etc
The idea was to have different style (refering to art) maps in one, each making a big island, as a normal map...
Exactly, that's a nice way to say it. If should fit with intermediate.
And, no, I didn't see them connected... but maybe we could put bridges or something like that... you have a point there.

I see no sketch, nor a link to said sketch.
Though I doubt I'd participate anyway because if I did my section would be either A: A bunch of messy lines made in paint or B: An image I didn't make. :p Be interesting to see how it turns out though.

Uhm... strange... It IS there... I'll add a link.
Also, It would be very nice if someone posted a png file with the colors to use, being the max of 64 (not including the transparent black, but an "almost black" would be handy), so the background and that remain there.
EDIT: oh, I saw that sketch not appearing. Just wait untill it loads :p
EDIT2: ok, now it won't load again... strange...
EDIT3: solved, now a link to the image has been added.
Would be better to create a template after the whole project is built.

I fail to see the logic behind that.

I mean, someone to post a palette to show which colors to use. If the total exceeds the 64, there can be display problems on it. (Look in the patch thread)
It's just that... I'm not sure how to do that
EDIT: wait... you quoted Deekay... now I know what you said :p anyways, I'm attempting at it now.
EDIT2: Well, I'm not sure about what colors should I put in the palette... any hints, help, or anything?

i have a better idea, what if each part had a different scheme to it? like 1 could be a normal, 2 a wxw, 3 a wfw, 4, a bng, 5, a rr 6, a plop war 7, a chute race and 8 a bna.
it can be like a multi purpose map, how bout that cept we all could pick out of it one and we'd each do a different one???

Nice idea but you only get to make one scheme to cover all these sections of the map. You'd have to implement a lot of rules to make sure people play fairly.
Besides, a BnG would have to be destructible terrain, wouldn't it? And a shopper indestructible?

what about rr, chute, boom, and battle race,
2 of each and it can be a giant race, first to finish. kind of in the same way as the br patchwork way they are sticking them together just somewhat bigger?????
Metal Alex
15 Jan 2007, 18:37
uhm... I was thinking of a multi purpose map... but if you manage to make the map also valid for a normal match... it would be perfect!
(kinda cave, with small paths to go, but too narrow for rope, or additional parts for intermediate scheme)
You can always pick an indestructible map scheme, and start at say, island 1, and having to go through island 2 cave, to end in island 10, somehow. Or something like that.

That is surely not confusing
Only that there are all the possible paths you could want... like, instead of strating in 1, go across 3 with chute first, then, go to 4, etc...
Or any other. Like those racing games with a city map on them, and the races are trough different streets...
I hope you know what I'm saying... I need some sleep now :p
I may post some example as an attachment... tomorrow... which is going to be a busy day D:

hmm..
Good idea metal.
Bad organization.
Better luck next time.

id do it if it was one huge island rather then floating islands, having several islands makes me feel the final map will be too much like a bunch of maps stuck together rather then a real map.

The problem with that is that you're either going to end up with a really long map with tonnes of empty space at the top, or everyone doing the bottom bits will be getting the short end of the stick as they'll basically have to fill up their entire space.

Bad organization.
indeed... :( I'm with exams right now, so I don't have all that time to do this...
But, I'd like to try it, anyways... And as for what Lyndon said, I had a though: how about trying to "fuse islands" when the map is complete? I mean, like bridges, "towers", etc... if the people from each island agrees how to "mix" them.
Then, it won't look so empty, and it would be good for more game styles... I mean, going from island to island easier sure helps it.
I personally believe that a map should be made with ONE particular play style in mind. If you're trying to make a map with large seperate 'chunks' for different game styles, why?
Just give us those 'chunks' seperately. That way, we won't need to load a massive map that we're only going to use a part of each time.
And trying to make it so that all pieces of the map can be made playable for a normal match wouldn't work. Do you ever see people play normal games on a map designed for rope races? No.
Here's my advice. Choose a particular game style now. Then make all parts of the map suit that particular game style. If you choose normal, then the different 'chunks' only need to be general. Also, remove the fact that these 'chunks' are just randomly placed in your map with large spaces between them. Piece them together, and try to define places where the different styles need to join. What would be even cooler would be to have the different 'chunks' overlap. So, for example, the leaning tower of pizza in the italian section could lean into the egyptian area. But that requires VERY good organisation.
Don't try to 'fuse' the maps together aftewards. Plan to 'fuse' them before hand. That makes designing the sections so mch easier.

You are right. Ok, first of all, the ones who are making a part, should post ideas for "fusing" with a neighbour island, then, one of the 2, edits the 2 maps, so they become 1.
At the end, then, we should just fuse 2 big islands... Or leave just 1 or 2 not linked.
and, the gameplay should be normal. But the theme is whatever you want.
This sounds interesting, quite a while ago I did start drawing up maps for WA - I tried to make them look like the current WA style maps and it went well.
I did start on making a re-make of "PC stuff" from Worms 1, but changing it heavly so really it'll just be a PC stuff theme.
If I joined the project I would make my section of the world map be that PC stuff theme and I would realy prefere to do a bottom of the landscape (a part that touches the water)
I wont say I'm joining yet because I do have many other things to do.
But if I do say I'm joining - it'll be after I have actually made the map just so I don't give out false promises by saying I will do something then not end up doing anything. :)
Oh and you said you wanted a palette of 64 colours: Here's a quick one I made in MS paint
http://www.myfilestash.com/userfiles/Chip_psy/64%20colour%20palette.bmp
The bmp itself has been limited down to what colours you can see, hope you like the colours I chose. :)

That palette is quite nice. The only bad thing I see is that it hasn't got white :p (I mean, there are 64 + white) thanks.
It can be easly edited to suit someone needs,
Change it how you like :)
I suggest a giant Walk for Weapons, it's easier to make than a mixture of many schemes, it's nice to do as a patchwork-project and it's still cool to use the whole map when it's done. Think creative. :)

I don't want to sound stupid... but what is that walk for maps exactly?
The map is illustrated with boxes each containing a graphic of one of the various weapons in the game. Players may only use a weapon during their turn if their selected worm is standing on the corresponding weapon graphic.
Have a look on www.wmdb.org for some examples

Oh! I get the idea. Sounds nice, and since you can ignore that, it should be playable the normal way too!

we need a layout. if you've seen a patchwork it's got specific areas where land connect like you have to tell us where parts have to be connected like where land from one map HAS TO touch the other.
