Nicked from RealVG (www.realvg.org).
As if the graffiti ads, racist squirrels amd zombie babies weren't enough... (http://www.alliwantforxmasisapsp.com/blog/)

Once again, Sony makes me rethink the idea of buying their products. Too bad they have some of the best games of the last generation, which I need to catch up on. Damn Disgaea 2. Damn it to hell :p

Okay, ironic promotion not-with-standing ("consider us your own personal psp hype machine"), I'd be okay with this quite pathetic show that they call a blog, if it weren't for one thing:

'all I w[square]nt fOr...' - in what universe does a square represent an A?

Busted! Now on site:
Busted. Nailed. Snagged. As many of you have figured out (maybe our speech was a little too funky fresh???), Peter isn't a real hip-hop maven and this site was actually developed by Sony. Guess we were trying to be just a little too clever. From this point forward, we will just stick to making cool products, and use this site to give you nothing but the facts on the PSP.

I don't think replacing an A in a word with a square is really promoting illiteracy. What's a better letter for a square?

A should clearly be a triangle though.

A square does the job nicely if they spell "want" as "wont".
Because bad spelling attracts teenagers like honey attracts flies.

Of course, then it's only an apostrophe away from "All I won't for christmas..."

Vader

The Triangle is used as the A before PSP. They had to use the Square as something, right?

Maybe they could have broken it slightly and used it as an L, but then that would contravene their own terminology standards.

I'm not sure why everyone makes such a big deal out of the PSP advertising. I personally think there's no more wrong with it than any other advertising.

Well, that's not strictly true. Sony have been known to break the law while advertising the PSP (see "graffitti ads", above).

In the case of this blog though, you're quite right; that's just standard viral marketing, and not a bad way of doing it at that. It's just too utterly unbelievable, so instead of going out and buying PSPs, people have laughed at it. Whether it was intended to get rumbled to generate publicity or if was just common or garden incompetence, we may never know.

I'd consider it to be half 'want' and half 'wont'. The square does sorta go well for combin ing an O with an A

sony's marketing department is practically asking to be fired. I don't think I've seen them make a good desicion for the past year.
either that, or thier own marketing hates them. as all they seem to be doing is making playstation and thier fans look bad.

Their advertising really is rather annoying. The thing that irritates me about sony is that they always seem to copy nintendo. Well atleast once nintendo come out with something new and cool, sony has a copy they try to make two times better shortly after. Such as rumble packs on the n64 (daul rumble on the ps controller later) and analog stick on the n64 (two on the ps controller a little after) sholder buttons on the snes and n64 (4 on the ps). Then I have the impression they copied the wii's controller thing were it moves (I forget what its called) with the same thing on the playstation controller. Perhaps I am just paranoid...

I didn't have a huge problem with it, except people kept calling it "sexy" (These people are saying that they are sexually attracted to an inanimate object. This annoys me) and there weren't any games that interested me apart from what Team17 brought out.

And speaking of video game ads, here's one for the Xbox360 (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7098937648618507097&q=banned+360+ad).
It was banned in a lot of areas. It's clear why, but still... it's a shame to keep such a well done and funny commercial from view.

well, I think sony used to work for nintendo, I think they made the hardware for thier consoles before the playstation was out, and playstation would've been a nintendo console, except they never finished it, so sony finished it off, released it as the playstation, under thier own name. as far as I know, they still work for nintendo.

The original PlayStation was 32-bit CD enabled a SNES addon. Nintendo pulled the plug before it was finished so Sony developed it to fruition. Probably the worst decision Nintendo ever made in retrospect.

That's why the abbreviation was PSX and not PS, and it's why the pad was so obviously just a SNES pad but made uglier and generally worse.

Sony never worked for Nintendo and probably never will. They collaborated with them on this one project until it was cancelled.

I don't think the controller is so bad... I never really had any problems with it. it's actually better than the snes one, in many respects.

but, sony was a hardware manufacturer- and still is, so I don't think they intended to get into this "console war" business- mind, if they did collaborate with nintendo before, I don't see why they wouldn't keep going with it...

I am afraid I have to disagree with you. The fact that the joystick is in a very awkward place, when having to use it its not too comfortable. Most of the time I use the d-pad on it whenever I can. Just the whole layout of the controller is awkward. I have to say the current best controller comfort wise is the gamecube one.

Probably just because Nintendo and Sony operate two utterly incompatible business models. Sony couldn't do what Nintendo do and Nintendo wouldn't want to do what Sony do. It would be like Microsoft and Google competing; they operate so differently they'd just end up bickering. I expect that's what caused them to stop working together in the first place.

The PS pad was better than the SNES pad in only one respect: it had two more buttons. The D-pad was harder to use because it had a hole in the middle. The action buttons had far more complicated names that were harder to type and took longer to say. Also they were coloured less obviously. The pad was less comfortable to hold and other than that it was the same.

hmmm... maybe my hands just grew to suit it.
I think it just depends on what you use first, or use the most, as I used a n64 before a playstation, I was used to that setup, but when I changed to a playstation it was quite hard at first, and I sometimes had to look at the buttons just to see what I was doing. if you just switch controllers for, say, one day (using someone else's console I suppose) then normally it's not as easy as if you were using your own controller.

never noticed that about the D-pad, though. I guess you're mostly right there. D-pads aren't really used for movement any more, and the D-pad is only used for menus and such.

the buttons.... ok, there's a couple more syllables, I guess, so they are harder to say. but once you remember where they are, you don't really need to know thier names anymore. if you're talking to someone else, usually I'd just say the function (shoot, etc.) that they should do, not usually what buttons to press.

Pretty much, the shooter says BANG, and the victim counts up to 10. During this they can move, and no one else can shoot them. When they're done, they're back in the game.
And you can be shot twice.

It relies a lot on honesty, so you have to be sure that you aren't playing with lame people.
