E-pens? Are they like graphics tablets? *runs*

I'm rather proud of my pc, total cost was about £300 over two years ago and it's still capable of playing high end games (Unreal 2.5 engine and Far Cry at any rate) games today

Athlon XP 3000+
1024 megs PC3200 RAM
GeForce 4200ti with 128mb
and about 300 gigs of hard disc space

All I need to do is buy a better GPU, say a GF 7600 (at about £60-80) and it'll be capable of the next generation of 3D engines. So to all you people who spent hundreds of pounds on your fancy pants PC I say 'nyer' :p

That ATI x1300 is good, but the 1.25Ghz is a HUGE drain.
I've got the same as you, except with twice as much Ghz, and I'm able to run B&W2 on medium quality. (note: B&W2 is one of the most grahically demanding games out at the moment)

Anyway:

Laptop with a Pentium 4 1.8GHz processor, 256MB of RAM, a 20GB hard disk (plus 80GB external hard drive) and a GeForce 4 420 Go 32MB thingy.

I'd probably be okay if it wasn't for the RAM...

WIKIPEDIA:
"A specification is a set of requirements. See also requirements analysis. Normally, a specification is the specific set of (high level) requirements agreed to by the sponsor/user and the manufacturer/producer of a system. The specification may also contain both the systems requirements and the test requirements by which it is determined that the systems requirements have been met, known as the acceptance test requirement(s), and a mapping between them."

what would be wrong with crt? it seems that most people dislike em, but until the flatscreens have won from the crt's in quality i'd say the crt's rock :)

CRTs take up more desk real estate. And, if you have a small, cluttered desk, that's bad.

Well there's always CD boot-discs.

You can boot off a USB memory stick if you've got a modern bios. There are even distros of linux which run entirely off a memory stick!

I took my floppy drive out to provide my case with some air cirulation, since I never used it and now my PC's a lot more stable.

Ohh, and as to CRT vs LCD - quality on an old CRT is much worse than a decent LCD, so let's save some space!

But isn't a CRT screen cheaper?

I may need correcting on this one

14 Sep 2006, 19:17
If you can find anywhere still selling them mabye, but they'll become like record decks soon - rare and no longer mass manufactured. You can get a decent LCD 17" for about £100 though.

My moniter was less than that (it's the same size too).

They're still made.

Akuryou13
15 Sep 2006, 13:52
But isn't a CRT screen cheaper?of course they are, and they're equally less good :p LCDs have gotten to the point that the picture quality in them is better than your average CRT monitor and it saves a lot of space. aside from that they're also pretty cheap as well, though not as cheap as a CRT, but you get what you pay for.

LCD > CRT

SupSuper
17 Sep 2006, 03:25

Plus I don't have a "ridiculously tiny computer desk" so I'd be wasting space if I got a LCD.

I dont really like lcds to be honest. I like a nice big bulky monitor on my desk. Gives more of that warm happy computer feeling. Same thing goes for wireless stuff. I like to have wires all over my floor and things hanging from the ceiling.

Really? A half-decent CRT moniter is just as good as a good LCD screen.

MrBunsy
17 Sep 2006, 13:42
With wires I'm definatly on your side. You should our house, or even just my room.

But I'll never go back to CRT again now, the only advantage it offers me is not having a native resolution. Saving space and not producing a tonne of heat is very useful for me.

Plus a wire is more reliable. And faster, and more secure, and easier, etc etc.

Akuryou13

Really? A half-decent CRT moniter is just as good as a good LCD screen.I guess I've only had crap CRTs then....I don't go around studying the things, I just make my statements based on personal experience.

I still prefer LCDs because I'm a LAN-party fan, and as such my computer gets moved from house to house relatively often.
