View Full Version : Desktop Thread, The Third

I am aware of the following desktop threads. The Desktop Thread (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=8371)The Desktop Thread Part II (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=8793)I have decided to make another one rather than reviving three-year-old threads.

Until yesterday, my desktop had only a solid colour (a sweet, lovely pink) as a background, but I decided to make a point of finding a nice background which goes nicely with my bbLean style. I think the image captures the feeling of typical IDM perfectly, which I happen to listen to quite often.

Alex's present desktop (http://lex.clansfx.co.uk/Media/Art/Screenshots/desktop2.png)

Those menus which are popped up are the totally-customizable bbLean menus. I can put absolutely anything I want into those menus, and I can move them around, make them disappear, etc. with ease.

What say-you?

You may do whatever you like in this thread, including post your own desktops, give mad critiques on good or bad desktops, talk about bad resolutions, bad desktop memories (perhaps immature desktop choices from years ago) and suchlike. I suppose I left out some positive topics. Oh well. You're creative. You think of them.

Note the stack of another desktop's worth in the top-right.
And if I didn't make that -DOWNLOADS- folder, I would have 144 more things on my desktop.
I am very bad at throwing stuff away... in both real life and my computer.

I am bad at throwing things away also, but I am getting much better at organizing my old things in archives which can be easily-accessed later. I have all the files of sentimental value and conversations I have ever had in the past 5 years stored up on my hard drives.

Where are your menus, Pigbuster? Also, the screenshot is entitled deskxp2.png, but you are not using Windows XP, as far as I know. Are you actually using Windows XP and that is just a shell replacement?

Imageshack makes random letters and numbers appear after the real title in the URL. It chose XP (And 2) by chance.

And I thought that this was more about desktops then menus, but if you want a menu, HERE YOU GO.

PNGs are great if you don't want any compression in your images but they take ages to load, even on 1meg broadband. Andy's was nearly a megabyte! One meg just to show some people on a forum what your minimalist desktop looks like! JPEGs are absolutely fine for this exercise.

One meg just to show some people on a forum what your minimalist desktop looks like! JPEGs are absolutely fine for this exercise. What are you talking about? I think you're getting PNG mixed up with BMP. PNG is a lossless compression format. It is perfect for desktop images, and has compression. Of course, those who use PNGs should definitely use maximum compression.

JPGs, on the other hand, I would argue are not good for this, considering they are lossy (yes, that is the official term for their method of compression) and don't make the desktop look crisp and clean, due to their lossy compression noise.

Andrew, I love your calendar! What is that software?

What are you talking about .png files are great. They are usually smaller than jpeg's, they look better and they support alpha channel. PNG for president 2007!

My turn.

http://gallery.thecybershadow.net/v/screens/

Btw. Since PNG is lossless compression, I could easily write up something that produces random noise and turn it into an RGB image. The PNG version of that image wouldn't be smaller by a lot than the BMP one. Thus, some images (photos, complex 3D renders, etc.) are better off as JPEGs. But everything with a small number of unique colours (MS Paint drawings, diagrams, etc.) is better off in PNG.

I know PNG is a lossless compression format, but JPEGs are fine for this thread; we don't need lossless images. Will anyone be mounting these on their walls? They're unnecessarily large. As an example, Andy's desktop PNG image is 1280x960 or thereabouts and nearly a megabyte, but mine is 1920x1200 and as a JPEG is half the size, but you can still see what's in it absolutely fine.

Stef, I opened your image and saved it as a JPEG with only 15% compression and got it down to 36KB.

As most of the images I do are either pixel art or for a website, I automatically save to png. JPG + Pixel art = Very bad. GIF + Pixel art = Bad. And I did create a thumbnail anyway for those who didn't want to view the big version. I nderstand your point, I just think pngs are the sex.

CyberShadow
1 Sep 2006, 06:43
GIF should be OK for pixel art, as long as you don't save with some pre-defined palette (I think Paint does that). GIFs support a custom palette, and thus are as effective as 256-colour PNGs, but also support animation.

Then you must've only checked JPG at maximum quality. JPG has a quality setting, and at around 85-90% quality or so it gives a good balance between file size and quality.

The background is an Oblivion screenshot, the Winamp skin is Drone, and the thingy on the right is Rainlendar, not the Yahoo! Widget Engine, which I gave up on when it was no longer Konfabulator.

I Googled your monitor, and found that about half the sites list its aspect ratio as 4:3 and the other half as 5:4. So, which is it, really? If it's 4:3, your resolution is totally wrong. There is a trend of monitor-producing companies using 1280×1024 for 4:3 monitors, despite 1280×1024 being a 5:4 resolution, which makes the image distorted.

Edit: I just measured the zoomed-in image of the screen in the specifications PDF, and it is actually a 5:4 monitor. :)

SupSuper

That's good to know. I just got it because it was the top recommendation on some magazine that tests things for you so you don't have to.

And the manual recommends 1280x1024, so I go with 1280x1024, specially since it was the only resolution that didn't look distorted or pixelized. On further note, a big reminder to trim down the default brightness/contrast is when you notice how anything #FFFFFF burns your eyes.

The biggest problem I have with wallpapers is FINDING them.

Example: go to deviantArt. Type in Wallpaper Half-Life 2. Wonder why you've got furry porn on your screen.

I used dA because wallpaper sites online tend to frighten me. I always think that they have such a spartan design, or horrible flashy things in order to divert me from their spyware-installing ways...

Where does everyone get theirs?I hate searching for wallpapers. For every 1 half decent wallpaper, there's another 1000 crap ones.

I'm leaving my wallpaper as it is, probably for years. Don't know if I'll ever change it again.

I don't get wallpaper from wallpaper sites.

I prefer ones based on video games and the like.

And I would like it if that fantastic C&C wallpaper had a lighter background, Xinos. :p

I know I probably shouldn't have. But it was just too damn tempting.

Mandlebrot set, you're a Rorschach test on fire,
You're a dayglow pterodactyl,
You're a heart-shaped box of springs and wires,
You're one badass ****ing fractal,
And you're just in time to save the day,
Sweeping all our fears away,
You can change the world in a tiny way...

Don't use MSN Messenger, use Adium (http://www.adiumx.com) - much better :p

Edit:

And screengrabs can be taken using the following methods (I assume they're the same in Leopard...). All screengrabs get saved as a PNG called "Picture x.png" on the desktop

Cmd+Shift+3 = Entire screen
Cmd+shift+4 then Drag mouse = screenshot of the selected area
Cmd+shift+4 then press spacebar = select a window and take a screenshot of that window

I should get to changing from the windows default background one of these days.

I wonder why it didn't catch the prtscn button being pressed.

Fellow Tablet PC user I see.:) I don't know if it's just me, but your wallpaper looks stretched, which it probably is if you're in portrait mode. The way I figured out to get around that if your resolution is 1024*768, then you take a larger image, crop it down to 1024*1024 and set it to centered rather than tile or stretch. It won't display the whole image in either landscape or portrait mode, but instead of stretching it out it'll simply show a different portion of the background.

That's what I did with mine (bar that my res is 1400*1050) - you can see that in landscape you can see more trees, but in portrait you see higher up the mountain and more water on the bottom. It really makes the transition unnoticeable.

You mean the iPod music liberator?
I don't have an iPod right now, it's my brothers iPod and he took it with him to Michoacan. I just wanted to rip all the music to my computer before he left. And that little program worked great for that. :p

kinda went and redesigned everything and downloaded some skinning stuff, so now everything looks spiffy-like. I later intend to add characters for my wife, taddar and kenvarin (another friend who I THINK was in my old comics, but I'm not sure) to the background, but for now it's just me.
