View Full Version : What are they doing with their old IP?

All signs point to "something", but Martyn's flat out stated that they're not currently working on any new Superfrog or Alien Breed games. Those are the two main contenders, so what else is up their sleeves?
There's the possibility of a new Body Blows game. The originals never could hold a candle to Street Fighter though, so if they made a new game in that particular franchise how would it hold up to other fighters out at the moment, such as Soul Calibur III, Tekken 5, or the Street Fighter Alpha Anthology?
There's also a chance that Team17 have become involved with [Jamie Woodhouse's GBA Qwak port (http://www.jamiewoodhouse.co.uk/pages/promo_qwak.htm)], helping Jamie to find a publisher. Jamie was also working on a spiritual successor to ATR - are Team17 involved in that?
Part of me wonders if they're working on a third Project-X game. The first was undeniably one of the finest SCHMUPs for the Amiga, and the second, while not as good as the first, was still one of the best SCHMUPs for the PSone.
Any thoughts...?
No plans for any of that. A lot of our IP will be appearing on gametap too (www.gametap.com)

So you can't tell us what you're doing, but you can tell us if we're wrong. Is that so we don't stop making stuff up and you can keep on laughing in your office? :p
Well, it seems like it really is gonna be something totally new that we totally can't guess.

No. They're currently at the pub. They'll work on Alien Breed Versus Spuerfrog when they get back to work tomorrow.
Heh, Spuerfrog. *snigger*
I'm really sorry about that....

Forgive my totally stupid question, but in the above context, what does IP stand for?
Wikipedia has drawn what appears to be a total blank....

Well, whatever it is, it sure isn't the original Superfrog sprite. This one is all antialiased and shaded and spiffy, and has a softer shape to it somehow. I don't think he'd go to all that trouble just to poke fun at us Superfrog fans.
Quite honestly, I don't know quite what to make of this. Even though a Superfrog game isn't in the pipeline (according to Spadge), that doesn't mean they aren't gearing up for the possibility of one. Given the size of the sprite, if that's the real size, I'd be inclined to think it's either a J2ME port (please!!!) or a DS port.

No thats the original sprite. Its just been scaled down somewhat in Photoshop, making it a bit blurry.
Squirminator2k
6 Aug 2006, 18:20
It's not being animated the same way, though. It's the original sprite being animated in a similar method to the Lemmings in... well, Lemmings PSP.

Maybe the poor man just wanted a nice, modern superfrog avatar and went ahead and did a little animation before he went to bed or...sigh...to the pub. >_<

Or he could have just been messing around with his Lemming animating software (how often would you say that?) by sticking Superfrog in it.

i know nothing about 3d animation or modeling, but it looks simple enough to be made just for fun.

From GI.biz (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=18946)
What are your plans with regard to the next-gen consoles?
What's interesting for us is that we can manage a full next-generation title using the fabulous Unreal 3 engine at the side of smaller, side projects for 360 Live Arcade, and also up and coming things for Sony's digital platform on PS3. I can't elude to what they are just yet, though...
and
Given the additional opportunities on digital distribution and reinvention of our earlier IPsI think remakes of old games for digital distribution is on the cards, and they're using UE3 for new titles. Perhaps a UE3 AB game? That'd work really well I think, with gritty graphics in a traditional overhead view. I hope not another 3D shooter. There's trillions of those already and three quarters of UE3 games end up FPSes. I want a good multiplayer Alien Breed, spruced up for the 21st century with full-on visuals and animations, interactive environments, and general stuff.

Well, one sign is that Luther appears to have animated Superfrog recently. Another sign is that a Superfrog based fan game (read: Mario64 knock-off) was asked to remove all Superfrog references by Team17. Another sign is that I seem to recall when this happened that Martyn said something like "Well, maybe if we didn't have any plans for Superfrog, we wouldn't mind".
All in all, I think it's pretty clear we can expect to see Arcade Pool 3 in stores soon.
I never played the original Superfrog.
What year was it released in?

1993. There's a demo up on Dream17.

That was about 1.5 years ago. And he was allowed to put it back up again later.

It's a pretty flexible engine.
That said, Jet Force Gemini used the Diddy Kong Racing engine, so you tell me what this imlies.

To me it implies your attempting to bring in something irrelevant, that you can't spell 'implies' (or 'smlies', but implies would make more sense) or don't pay attention to your typing, and that two equally annoying and rather different games can use that engine.

most good engines are, but it still narrows it down slightly. for example, it would not be particularly good for most kinds of rts. based on engine alone, the most likely candidates are fps, racing, rpg, or point-and-click. if it's known that it isn't an fps and keeping in mind that no good point-and-clicks have been made in about a decade, racing or rpg seem most likely.

Maybe they're making a point-and-click?
quakerworm
19 Aug 2006, 06:01
there can be only two outcomes to that. either they will try to make a point-and-click that appeals to publishers, fill it with complex 3d graphics, arcade mini-games, and other junk, and the game will end up vomit-inducingly bad. or they will try to make a good point-and-click, keeping to traditions set by the best of hits, and nobody will want to publish it.

I cant see Team17 making an fps any time soon. Maybe they are making a racing game. But, if they are going to take a break from worms, then how exactly are they going to make something like this attractive to anyone?
I bet this is all a clever way of telling us that, somehow, they are on the verge of falling into administration.

But I would heartily welcome another Simon the Sorcerer game. Yet another series, like worms, that may have suffered with the attraction to 3D games. Simon 3D was so dreadful I seriously think the bad cube-like graphics were on purpose (Simon even made a joke about it).
Whatever happened to Adventure Soft?
Maybe Team17 can buy the rights to it or something?

Actually, there's one in development right now. It's being developed by [Silver Style (http://www.silver-style.com/)], a German company. Some of the original creative team (including, I believe, Simon Woodroffe) are involved too.

We are going off-topic somewhat, I will end this line of discussion by saying that some of the original Simon devteam are working on Simon4, which means it should still be good. While Simon3D was rubbish, the humour and story were still very much intact.
But that's off-topic.
