View Full Version : Worms2 on Wireless Network

I've just bought Worms2 on CD for my children and they wish to play it against each other over our wireless network. I've established the two machines IP addresses and set up addresses for both. The firewall on both machines is turned off and they can ping each other happily. Both machines are running directx 9c and have had the worms 2 patch installed version 105.
What happens is that one machine hosts, which then appears on the other. This other machine sees the first, and clicks join game. This appears to work, in that the name appears on the other machine, but the joining machine receives the message saying that the host has closed the door. This is not the case.
I do not wish them to play through the internet, just at home against each other.
Any ideas?

alright, Marc -- try following these directions and let me know if you can get the 2 computers to successfully load the game :) if not we may have to do some more tweaking -- i typed it up realy fast in word, so sorry if it sounds really instructiony and choppy -- if you still have problems, please email me at adamrgolf@hotmail.com or post on my forum www.computerhead.biz/forum because i don't check the t17 forum that often, but i probably will now since i want to see if you were able to get this to work for your kids :)
Best of luck! Let me know how it goes if it doesnt go, we can try to figure something esle out :)

Playing Worms:2 on a local network using the IPX protocol
The following will explain how to set up Worms:2 and your computer to allow multiple players enjoy this game using only a local area network (LAN).
I am going to explain how this is done on Windows XP machines using Worms:2 version 1.05. If you have different versions of either and these instructions do not help you figure out how to configure IPX for your versions, please post on my site: http://www.computerhead.biz/forum.
This is how I set up worms and IPX on two windows XP machines:
First of all, I don’t know if it matters much or not, but I did make sure that windows firewall was turned off, and any other software firewall was disabled.
You need to install an IPX protocol for your network adapter, on both (or all) PCs.
-Go to the control panel on the first computer (Start Button -> Run -> control)
-Open Network Connections
-Find the network connection that the computer uses to access the LAN.
-Right click and choose Properties
-Under “This connection uses the following items:” click install
-Chose Protocol and click add
-Now, select NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol
-And click OK
-After a few seconds this will show up under “This connection uses the following items”
-Click the NWlink IPX protocol, and click properties
Note: this is where it gets tricky.
-For internal network number, leave them as all 0’s
-Under Frame Type: chose 802.3 on the first computer only!
-Then for network number enter something like 00000010
You only do this on one pc b/c then on the others you can leave it as “auto select” and it will configure itself from the information set on this one PC. (Something called an SAP which i just learned about from reading about IPX and windows XP -- http://www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=428260&page=1)
So set all that and click OK.
Now on the other computers, just install the IPX protocol above, but leave the Frame Type as Auto Select.
Now when you start worms on a PC, instead of having TCP selected and IPX disabled (unelectable) it should now let you choose IPX instead of TCP. Do This.
Then click the network button (The left big button above IPX).
Now join with another computer and everything should work OK.

Thanks for your message, and I'll give it a go shortly. Unfortunately, that's not going to be this bank holiday weekend, as one of my children is at cub camp, and being a dutiful parent, I offered to help out. So..... I'm going to be under canvas the whole weekend long and won't be anywhere near a computer (or a radiator, or a proper shower or any other of those 'mod cons').
Let's hope that the rain forecast for Sunday and Monday *@#£$%'s off elsewhere!!!
They joys of being a parent (actually, I must be mad, but I'm really looking forward to it!!)
Will post next week.

I did this, and on the one computer that it is still auto-detecting, I am receiving a message that says unable to connect to specified IP address. Has any one else had this problem?

well done, you really did what you were gonna say ;\
I'm having the same problem, but I'm on a wired connection.
I start a game on one computer (TCP) and the other person sees it as closed.
I tried the IPX but it errors.
I tried patching, but the patch breaks the game (ironically). I only have 1 cd-rom drive so the FAQ don't help much.
I invited people over to play (LAN is on June 9th), but through testing to see how it works, it won't work.
Any help would be appreciated.
BTW, I hope no one beats on me for saying this, but I'm testing how LAN games work with identical copies (of a single copy which I bought).
