Quite an interesting take on the strips.

That's both interesting AND hilarious.
And it makes Jon look like even more of a loser.

Seen it. Garfield is ridiculously funny when you remove Garfield's dialogue. :)

I rather liked Garfield anyway, but yeah, that is pretty cool. Reminds me of Gromit in a number of ways...

Oh, I'm not saying that Garfield isn't funny anyway. Just that without his dialogue, it becomes even better.

For me, Garfield runs out of steam around 1994. It's about then that you realise he's repeated himself just a few too many times...

Well, I've got one Garfield book that cost me 5p in a school market thing when I was younger. That book's great and that's enough for me. I also used to like Garfield and Friends but I do agree that it wouldn't take long till you realised that you had too much of the cat. After all, without any character or plot development, how many jokes can you make about a man and his pet?

I have a lot of Garfield books (about 14 Classics, two Sunday collections and the 21st Anniversary), but I've stopped getting them now.
Garfield in small doses, such as when I first discovered him while slacking off library prefect duty at Comp and I guess in your personal experience, is excellent.
In medium doses, such as when I started collecting him, he's good.
But there comes a point when... you get the picture.

I like Garfield myself, but in recent years it's become rather dull, I think.

Wow.
It is astounding how much funnier Garfield is without the cat talking. It actually becomes one of the funniest strips I've ever read. And this is coming from a guy who absolutely despises Garfield.

I guess we just have to completely ignore the thought bubbles when we read Garfield, eh?

And there's also the Garfield Randomizer for extra fun. The original page got taken down by a Cease and Desist order from evil lawyers, but the author left the code for anyone to try it out:
<html>
<head>
<title>The Eagle_Fire Garfield Randomizer</title>
<style type='text/css'>
td {
overflow: hidden;
text-align: left;
vertical-align: top;
max-height: 200px;
max-width: 180px;
}
img {
position: absolute;
}
</style>
</head>
<body>
<table border=1><tr>
<td width=200 height=180 id=td1>*</td>
<td width=200 height=180 id=td2>*</td>
<td width=200 height=180 id=td3>*</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td><input type=checkbox id=ck1>Lock</td>
<td><input type=checkbox id=ck2>Lock</td>
<td><input type=checkbox id=ck3>Lock</td>
</tr>
</table>
<script language="JavaScript1.2">
function fmt(n) {
n = Math.floor(n);
if (n < 10) return "0" + n;
return n;
}
function load() {
var t = new Array("td1", "td2", "td3");
var c = new Array("ck1", "ck2", "ck3");
for (i = 0; i < t.length; i++) {
if (document.getElementById(c[i]).checked) continue;
year = 2001 + Math.random() * 4;
month = Math.random() * 12 + 1;
day = Math.random() * 30 + 1;
panel = Math.random() * 3;
if ((new Date(fmt(month) + "/" + fmt(day) + "/" + fmt(year))).getDay() == 0)
day = (day + 1) % 31 + 1;
if (month == 2 && day > 28) day = 28;
imgurl = "http://images.ucomics.com/comics/ga/"
+ fmt(year) + "/ga" + fmt(year % 100) + fmt(month) + fmt(day) + ".gif";
tu = document.getElementById(t[i]);
tu.background = imgurl;
tu.style.background = "url(" + imgurl + ") " + -200 * Math.floor(panel) + "px 0px";
}
}
load();
</script>
<br>
<input type='button' value = "Go" onClick="load()">
</body>
</html>
Just create a new text file in your disk, paste all that code in, save it as "whatever.html" and voilá.

I used to be a massive fan of garfield. I've still got more than 70 books. The only reason I'm not still a massive fan is that awful live action movie that some well meaning relative unleased upon me one christmas.:p Although I still enjoy the strips it's become clear to me that Garfield should have ended around about the 20 year mark.
The main problem with garfield is that dispite going for almost 30 years now it only realy has 3 regular characters, one of whom can't speak and another can't react to anyting the remaining character says. Originaly there was a fourth regular character, Jon's friend Lyman, who vanished for no good reason in the early days of the strip. Which left Jon with no one to talk to but his animals.
Another problem with the strip is Jon. Initialy Jon was a more rounded character, he had a job, a housemate and the object of his offection actualy showed signs of liking him, in one strip he actualy got a goodnight kiss from Liz. He often got one over on garfield and he wasn't always the butt of the joke. But now Jon is some kind of sad, lonely freak with no friends, social skills or life. He's become entirely one-dimensional.
It seems od to me that a lot of people's main complaint about garfield is that it's unoffensive. I don't see why you need to offend people to be funny.
Anyway,that's the end of my meandering, pointless rant.
that awful live action movie
OMFG!
Damn you! You have again remembered me about that stupid movie.
It's the second worst movie I have ever seen. (Only beaten by "Thir13en Ghosts".)
I really do like the comic strip and luckily only know a fraction of them.
I never liked Garfield that much, but still read it.
It has nothing on The Boondocks though.:p
Pigbuster
20 Feb 2006, 06:46
Boondocks is indeed a good one. Get Fuzzy, Pearls Before Swine and One Big Happy are the ones I like. One Big Happy is one of the few cartoons in which a kid can say something dumb and it can actually be funny. :p

I'm an average fan of Garfield. The comics and cartoons are ok, but the action movie was PURE S***!
Let's just pretend that never happened.
I've always liked Garfield from as far back as I can remember, and I personally think he's still got it. :p
You win 100 internets!:cool:
Now I just have to figure out how to fit them inside a box...

I still like the comic, but I say books 21-23 are the best.

Heh, thoose comics turned much better.
I made my own veriation...

Yes Garfield is one dimensional but so is a lot of humour. My favourite is one where Garfield is looking at a ball of yarn and thinking "Entertain Me".

These are mostly random, the odd one or two have been locked and generated for a desired effect.
Here are the not-entirely-strange ones. I like the second one best :) It was completely random, too!
