Installation problems:
Getting a 16-bit SubSystem error, or a video card error, and running on XP?
Download http://www.laene.nl/fb/fixingstuphp.zip and run it once it should fix the problem.

Problems starting frontend:
Getting a "CD ERROR: NO AUDIO" error?
Make sure you installed your game with the CD being put in the lowest CD drive, (if you have E:\ and D:\, install and run it from D:\)
If you are trying to run the game from an ISO, go to your control panel, administrative tools, Computer Management, and from there click on "disk management" on the right, and make sure the letter of your virtual drive is the lowest, if not, make it so by right clicking it -> Change Letter Path.

Problems in frontend:
Your teams are never here, instead you have 1 random team that you never created?
I've had this problem several times, and I'm fairly sure it was due to the fact I was using a shortcut to start the game.

Online:
When you join a game, the door is always closed?
Make sure you have the latest directx from www.microsoft.com (currently 9.0c)
If for some reason you are unable to update, then read the DirectX 9 patch information on http://www.spadger.uk.ro

You can never connect to games, or people connect to you?
First of all, Make sure your windows XP firewall is turned off (or properly configured to NOT block neither frontend.exe nor worms2.exe)
If you are using a router, I recommend reading how to use the router patch at www.spadger.uk.ro. It has worked for everyone so far.

starting a game:
Do you get a Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime library error?
Right click your frontend.exe, check its properties, look at the version tab, it should say either 1.0.1.7 or 1.0.1.5, if it doesnt, get the patch from http://w2.team17.com
If the version is correct, make sure you are running the game from its root directory (not using any shortcuts) and running frontend.exe, not worms2.exe.

I'll be adding more to these when I can think of them, but thats most of the problems people get. Hopefully this will help.

-Getting a "CD ERROR: NO AUDIO" error?
Make sure you installed your game with the CD being put in the lowest CD drive, (if you have E:\ and D:\, install and run it from E:\)

Actually, it is the drive you have the sound card connected to. On mine, it is actually D:\, not E:\ that has the sound card. Actually, IIRC, I read somewhere official (I think it's the readme) that the majority of computer's sound cards are connected to the 1st drive!

Also, on mine, I didn't get an error, It just didn't play any music.

Look at your post - "ABCDE are like 12345": Letters are LIKE numbers, but they're not ACTUALLY numbers. Anyway, 4 is before 5 as you count forwards, and D is before E. Unless you read the alphabet backwards.

I'm correct. End of discussion. Now back to fixing W2...

what?
you count up to something, not down to something!
so d is lower than e, as 4 is lower than 5!

why do you think the a:\ drive is lited at the top in windows?
why do you think the A column in excel is listed on the far left (the first) followed by the AA column after 26 columns?
why do you think in the hexdecimal system the A, B, C, D, E & F are used after the numbers 1-9?
why, oh why?

D:\ IS lower than E:\!
sorry...

problem is, you can shuffle the entries in a list and stuff on top of the list would be still be higher!

try removing a drive in your windows settings!
after the next reboot you'll see it re-sorted! it's not simply a list!

look -->here (http://www.microsoft.com/learning/books/troubleshooting/solutions/89.asp) too!
you'll find some info, that D:\ is indeed lower than E:\

windows assigns the drive letters according to their IDE path they have in bios, afaik!

So then you can't run W2 from an image? I've specifically created virtual drive A:\ and instaled the game from it to make sure no-one says I didn't do it from the lowest drive, only to get the CD error. Meh.

Edit: Funnily enough, I get the error even when installing [and running] from the only DVD-ROM drive the laptop has. No W2 for bad bad me.

Flamie

Just create a virtual drive, then thru your admin options change your driver path so the created one is the lowest ;]

I wouldn't use A: for emulating a CD! A and B are by defualt reserved for floppies, I think it's probably still built into even windows XP.

KRD
14 Jan 2006, 23:21
Nah, I tried with other images, A:\ and B:\ seem to work flawlessly on XP SP2.

Anyhow, I god rid of A:\ and B:\ now, got the game to run off the CD, which isn't too bad aside from the laptop trembling and heating up like mad.

But after patching it [frontend.exe was version 107 off the CD] with the WP patch version 40, every single game I join or host simply desynchronises the moment it switches from frontend to gameplay. No idea why and, with a few exceptions who tried to help but failed, the people on the server aren't of much help either.

I figured it could be one of the firewalls, but the same happens even with both and each seperately turned off.

Marc: I played around with the idea of switching the DVD+RW drive to E:\ and making D:\ a virtual drive, but VirtualCD has issues with itself and keeps reporting an error of some kind. I'll try to make the game work from the disc for now. oOoO;

Update: The near-success has made me optimistic enough to reinstall the game and patch it with the 40 patch. Big mistake, as I now get the default Windows error-reporting window the second Frontend.exe should start.

KRD
17 Jan 2006, 17:42
Okay, I got it all working now thanks to your ideas, Marc. Switched my DVD+RW drive to E:\ and made D:\ a virtual drive. W2 runs flawlessly other than the fact that the Yorkshire server suffered another blow. [My bet that it's cleaning ladies tripping over the cables is still on.]

The trick in making it work was installing the correct version of the unofficial WP patch [attached below] and only enabling the less agressive of the options.

Flamie
18 Jan 2006, 05:24
lol yes of course, some of the options make w2 crash, I'd stick to:
-enable ascii names
-enable the extended weapon editor and option editor.
-Fix ninja rope glitches
-Disable nuke
-set your resolution.

Thats about it if I remember right.... hmm krd on w2... Might have to fetch my CD now ;O

Hi

I have some problems running Worms2 on XP.
Installation runs, all ok. But after it, when I try to start the game I get the message there is no CD in drive. I got drive I and H, and always use I 'cause H is my burning drive.
Then I installed that Update patch for frontend. Fine. Tried compability mode. Did not work 'cause of that Visual C++ error. Can hardly read that message, the screen all black. So I switched off the compability mode. Same error. Next I tried the frontend.exe There I got the no CD in drive error.
After that I found that XP fixing tool on the beginning of Flamie's post. Tried it, but did not help. Same errors.

Help me please *sob*

EDIT: Tried a new installation, and tried drive H. I tried running the game in H before, but not to install it from there. And it works now *jump around*

Big thanks to Flamie, because the little tool on the beginning of his post solved that annoying win-16-system errors on my mum's notebook. She will be happy that she can play her beloved Mah Jongg again :)

You need to use the CD/DVD drive with the lowest drive letter. In your case that's H.
You can swap the two drive letters:

(If you don't find the link, press Windows key + R and enter %SystemRoot%\system32\compmgmt.msc /s)

Ive got a problem....with network games...
me and my friend are trying to play...we tried both internet games and using Hamachi(it simulates a LAN over an internet connection, same thing as we were in the same network).
we go to a room (both lan and internet), we can see each other, then i create the game, he enters, normally, then i put the options, weps, maps and stuff, so i start the game, the 'searching' window opens, i find him, he finds me, then we enter the game, when we enter the game, the enemy has "given up" due to a network problem.

the problem isnt the program hamachi, cuz we played Warcraft3 using it, and the same problem ocurrs using internet and the lan option(cant use ipx, so we use tcp).

what could be that? =(

I don't know if any of the described problems are the same as mine. When I install worms 2, it works fine and great. After I apply the 1.5 patch, frontend crashes when I try and start a game.

At first I figured I applied the wrong patch, so I tried a few different ones: English, German, and American. Besides language, is there anything that actually differs between these patches? If so, how can I know which version I need?

If this isn't a patch problem, does anyone have an ideas what the issue is? Any help is much appreciated.

when ysing the v4.0 patch make sure you don't have any of the options which obviously will result in a desync... for instance increasing ninja rope length.

hubejea make sure your not using version 1.017 as thats the latest pre-patched version of the game... and make sure that you don't use try media version of the game. (same goes for everyone... do not ever get try media versions of any worms game)

I assume you are talking about what happens when you stick the CD into the drive?
(I assume this because I get that message with my Sold-Out disc)

If you are wanting to install W2, just type {E}:\AUTORUN\GAME\SETUP.exe into the Windows Explorer location bar. (Replace {E} with the drive letter of your lowest CD or DVD drive, with the Disc inserted)

If you just want to play, close the SetupMM application with Task Manager, and run as normal.

Hope this helps..

i have a LAN and the door is closed on games... I've just updated directx as adviced and turned both the firewalls off. Both comps are running patched versions of worms on win XP.

http://spadger.uk.ro
read the "router problems" page, that will help you allow other people to join you.

i'm not sure why the door would be closed when you join others though, there's only 3 reasons the door doesnt open (that i'm aware of):
1) you dont have directX 9.0c
2) the host is actually closing the door on you, which is quite likely if you are trying to join players in the 'cases' room on the uk1 server, see the 'worms2 leagues' page on my site for more details on case's
3) you're connection could be ultra-slow, and it might just be taking a long time to download all the data from the host....but i'm talkin cup & string modems here...it shouldnt take more than maybe 10-15 seconds to get into a game, even on dialup.

Anyone else got any ideas?

Hello,
i'm trying to play on LAN. I have two machines, one with win 98 and the other with win xp. Both of them have the firewall down and directx 9.0c. I have tried the patch from http://www.spadger.uk.ro/ for directx. I don't use any rooter. I use a nice switch (rooters sucks a lot for me).
The door is closed, always closed..... i can host a game but i can't join because it's damned closed..........

make sure you install support for NETBIOS for your network in windows 98... otherwise you may not be able to network with winXP that easily.

BlackGen
23 Jan 2007, 14:58
Of course :) my lan is ok, i can share folders and surf the web. It's worms 2.... it have issue with directix 9.0c, that's the problem..... Now i have eradicated the directix 9.0c and installed directix 8.0 on win 98. If i do a server with win xp then i can join with 98. Unfortutely when i try to start a new game on the 98 side the game don't really start.... for me is win xp than still have the damned directx 9.0c.... so the players can't join together properly
I definitely need a solution because i really can't unistall directix 9.0c from xp and put the 8.0.... you know, all the latest games need 9.0c.

franpa
24 Jan 2007, 02:27
direct x 9.0c works fine... its versions of direct x 9.0 prior to the 9.0c release that have a problem.

your problem is a different problem :) but i don't know what exactly... :(

http://spadger.uk.ro/router1.html

for this info to work you have to forward tho's ports... for your firewall you will have to allow whatever directplay parts get used access through tho's ports as well as the game itself.... i tried via my firewall allowing the games exe files access to tho's ports... it didnt work... i found that if i grant every single thing access on tho's ports it will work.

if anyone has any clue as to how one would determine exactly what parts of directplay and/or widows require these exceptions added in to a firewall... post here.

my wording is a lil off tonight -.-'

port forward

# Port 47624
# port 17000 (17171 demo)
# port 5431
# port 53

allow through firewall

8 Mar 2007, 01:16
Yeah that's the same. And yeah I updated it with Worms2Patch005_En.exe.

I've just made the CD into an ISO which works fine, so I guess I could just use that instead. A little more space but oh well.

franpa
8 Mar 2007, 04:36
so you...

a) installed the game to a folder with no space in it.

b) updated the game.

c) copied the data folder over and made sure none of it is marked as read only... only need to check the read property for win9x.

d) cracked the game.

Yup, and I used the drive with the lowest drive letter and made no spaces in the game path.

I've actually got a different problem now.. after restarting my PC I can't get frontend.exe to run, it just does nothing. worms2.exe works though. I tried replacing it with the one in the update patch but no luck. Then I checked the registery settings to make sure it pointed to the game and it does. Even after uninstalling and reinstalling the whole game I can't get frontend.exe to work.

I foolishly bought the trymedia version of Worms 2 earlier, as I suddenly decided that I absolutely HAD to play it immediately, and the shops are all shut at this time on a Sunday.

Initially it worked fine, but then, when I tried to launch the game the second time, good old Vista sends me a cheery message telling me that frontend has stopped working, and had to be closed, but Vista will let me know when a solution becomes available (which actually means that it will do precisely nothing).

When I try to launch using worm2.exe instead of frontend.exe I get an almost identical message, only the with the word 'frontend' being replaced by 'worms2'. Helpful.

Any ideas at all would be gratefully received (although, as I've hopefully conveyed- I am an idiot, so please use short, non-technical words... :D ).

Cheers.

I suggest you get your money back ASAP and buy a retail CD version.
You can get multi-packs from the Team17 store (https://secure.team17.com/).
You should get 2-3 games (including shipping) for the price you paid for the Trygames version.

I suggest you get W2, WA & WWP to get the best of all the 2nd generation 2D games.
If you only want one, get WA.

I think this (http://computerhead.biz/forum/viewtopic.php?t=65) is the most we have on vista so far, which probably doesn't help much. I think the gist is to drop as much security as possible.

Win XP, when I try to start "Setup.exe" nothing happens. I go to Task Manager (after 15mins) and find in Processes tab " wowexec.exe" and " setup.exe" (with the space at the beginning) if I try to end them it gives the 16-bit SubSystem error. I tryed the patch thingie, didn`t work. Please help.

Oh, and also ntdvm.exe (another process). When i end this wowexec and setup processes end toghether.
Another thing, wowexec.exe and setup.exe don`t show any Memory usage (it`s blank).

Later edit: Nevermind ... i found out that if I try to start Setup and then try to reboot my PC ... it doesn`t reboot, the setup starts ..........................................

I have exactly the same problem as this however rebooting my computer doesn't solve the problem. I'm currently running XP Pro on a laptop. Please let me know if anyone has a fix for this, I'm desperate to play W2 again!

I got exactly the same Problem with W2, but it isn't solved yet.
1) got version 1.0.1.5
2) Win Xp pro

update worms 2, and JCM you should have uninstalled worms 2 instead of just deleating it... unless you can find the registry entries (to delete them) the installer isnt going to get that far :P

Same problem here, except reboot does not help.

I'm using the SoldOut-version of the game. My friend tried installing it on his computer and it works just peaches - on mine it doesn't get pass the Worms-window where you can choose install or play.

I installed the fix mentioned on the opening message, it didn't help.
I've tried changing drive letters, it doesn't help.
I've tried running the program in Win98 and Win2000 compatibility modes, no help.
I tried copying all files from the disc to my hard drive, no help.

I'm really _really_ at a loss here!

Computer's running WinXP SP2; drive letters C, D, E and G, disc letter F. Windows and all other programs are on C. Memory, disc space, graphic card etc. are better than minimum requirements.

Hi everyone, so I am new here and I am sure that this has been covered but I've been having no luck with getting worms 2 to work.

I tried posting this as a new thread but it didn't seem to work..

I have installed, and updated and fixed the no cd problem but when I run frontend, it will take me into the game menu, I can select a game/teams etc. but when I go to play it, it closes to windows saying Frontend.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close..

I've checked all around to no relief in the issue and was hoping someone could explain why it's happening and possibly how to fix the problem.

Is the issue due to my graphics card or because something of xp? I've read a couple things about directx but didn't really understand what the problem was.

Again, I'm sure it's been covered, but I have tried to figure it out and cannot find any answers anywhere. A link to similar discussion would be nice, though actual discussion about it would be appreciated. Thank you oh wise people of forumland in advance :D

HEEELP T_T

(old post but) I thought Id quote this as this is the problem im having. For tat matter has anyone played it online without a router? or even got to playing it online?

Ive been trying to solve the problem with "Fabio" and we got as far as connecting with eachother, id host a game, he would join the game, Id then launch the game to actually start playing it then a countdown window pops up saying looking/locating connection with Fabio's name in red meaning its lost connection (cant remember exactly what it said now)

We tried half a dozen stuff BUT without comparing and setting up our computers the same. Apart from that, as a test I opened DMZ (all ports) on my ip through the router and allowed all on my firewall (using sygate 5.5). Fabio on the other hand did the same with his firewall but said he couldnt open up his router because he doesnt have control over it - so the problem may of been there. To connect to each other we used hamachi connecting over internet tab on worms using team17 server and fabio could join the game i created, id launch the game and after 2mins countdown loss of connection, game would load but fabio drops out straight away (i presume its lost connection due to the long countdown, our connections arnt that slow)

Now Im willing to spend sometime going over everything, comparing everything so we have the same configuration and go over every nook and cranny to see if we can get this game to work online.
Does anyone want volunteer?

You have to forward a couple hundred Direct X ports on your routers as it uses a legacy direct x network interface.

Liksis site or whatever lists the ports you need. You also need to use an IP changer to change what IP the game things yours is.

Yeah Snatch made an IP Changer for the game as well as some others, you can get them from http://computerhead.biz/forum/. You will need to explicitly run it as an Administrator too.

You can check your real IP via http://www.whatismyip.org/

I tried creating a new thread but for some reason it didn't work.

I installed Worms 2 earlier today, and when trying to play the game I got the error message "Unable to start CD player".

I tried installing the patch hoping that would fix the issue, and now I get the error "Cannot find Worms 2 CD".

I've read through this thread and not found a solution. I only have one CD/DVD drive on my PC so the solutions about using a specific drive in this thread won't work.

Can anybody help me fix this issue?

Thanks.

Yeah, don't apply the patch. You have to reinstall W2 now. Then try to turn off the in-game music via the option menu.

I haven't read all of the posts in this thread but...
Whenever I start Worms 2, I can normally do everything in frontend, but when I press Launch or Play or whatever, the game does not start, it just says frontend.exe had stopped responding.
Are there solutions for that?
Oh and, I am using Windows 7 32-bit.

I bought Worms 2 from download-free-games.com last week. I have Windows Vista and the game worked except everytime I tried to alter the terrain in some way or even start the game with a random map, I got the landgen.exe error. The match would start, but I would always play on the same exact terrain. I did some research and got nowhere. I figured it out myself.
To fix it:
Find the landgen.exe file and right-click it.
Select Properties.
Click the Compatibility tab.
Check the checkbox where it says "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"
I selected Windows 98 / ME.
The next time I tried to use the terrain editor, I didn't get the error message and it works great.
Enjoy!

Since my post seemed to not make it through cyberspace I'll try again...forvie me if it turns out to be doublepost..

I've tried to play worms 2 over the net with a friend. Tried faking LAN with tunngle, which worked on win7 but then it doesnt support IXP and now I have winXP on a different partition and now we can't even see each other in the lobby in worms after logging on tunngle...

But we are now able to get into the same game on wormnet. He can join my game, i can't join his game though. But as soon as the game start it seem like we get disconnected. When the "waiting for player" changes into his turn to choose a worm, the timer just stays at 10 secs and after a while the game act as if the other person forfeit or something.

Haven't found anything about it on the net and I am clueless...

Two things:

Check that you have full read/write access on the folder Worms 2 is installed in, and
if all else fails, try running the game in Administrator Mode.

Muzer

You'll want to make sure Worms 2 is NOT installed in Program Files, as it doesn't have permission to write to itself there. Install it in the recommended installer's location of C:\Team17\Worms2 . I think it also has trouble with paths with spaces in so make sure you don't have any of those either.
